Custer State Park, South Dakota

We are trying to put together a family camping trip there the summer of
2013.

We would reserve two ajacent sites for RV, we have one 29 ft 5th wheel
and one 29 ft TT. Looked like some places have hookups
We also have two tents total of 7 adults & one 4-1/2 yr old.

We enjoy hikes, fishing, campfires, etc.

Open to suggestions & comments.

Just one comment. Doesn't help as I can't name names.

BUT

Before you connect to CG city water, TASTE IT. Some of the water in the Black Hills has LOTS of sulfer in it. Likely take a long time to clean your fresh water tanks once it is in there.

We stayed at Horse Thief Campgrounds when we did 2 weeks out there. Since we spent most of the time there touring, I can't say much about the CG except that it had full services and I had no complaints.

We stayed at Custer State Park about 2 years ago, for seven days.

NO hookups but water spickets within reach of each camping area.

We loved it.....but then we love to dry camp!

Would very highly recommend spending some time at Elkhorn Ridge RV Resort just east of Spearfish, S.D. It is about 40-45 mi. NW of Custer. The place is truly one of the best parks we have ever stayed in. Large sites, all of which are concrete with interior paved roads, awesome scenery in all directions and the staff is excellent.

We live a few miles outside Rapid City and camp at Custer State Park on a regular basis. There is no better place to camp and experience the black hills than Custer State Park. Nicely spaced sites, with beautiful surroundings and sometimes wildlife at your doorstep (Buffalo are common visitors to some of the campgrounds). The park is very well located for access to not only park attractions such as the needles highway, but to Mount Rushmore, iron mountain road, Crazy Horse Monument and Wind Cave a host of tourist attractions. Plus in the Park you can fish, hike and have great campfires. Most all park campgrounds have electric hookups, hot showers, gravel pads and shade and I think all are around $22 per night. If you want full hookups, the only options in the black hills are at private campgrounds, and there are a number with all of the amenities. Of course you will usually be very cozy with your next door neighbor and be paying 2 times as much or more. I would suggest looking at the following Custer State Park Campgrounds- Game Lodge, Grace Coolidge, and Stockade Lake with the Game Lodge being the favorite.:wlcm:

Instead of "Buffalo Bill" would he have liked "Bison Bill" :) Bison or buffalo are interesting to look at, from a safe viewing point ... Yellowstone Park Rangers were quick to point out to us the correct proper name like we were insulting the species...Would enjoy going back, BEAUTIFUL, INTERESTING part of America.

A year ago we stayed at Broken Arrow campgrounds right out of Custer. Really nice place and super nice people who own it. I highly recommend it.

that is interesting about the name of buffalo, I remember that from years ago. I wonder why they were so intent to point this out that way. I doubt they bison/buffalo really care! Heck I will call them a kangaroo and see if they get insultedl (sighhhh, some people I swear)
