New 5er puller

Just purchased a 2011 Montana High Country 343RL. I am looking forward to gaining insight and tips to towing a 5er compared to a travel trailer. Used to pull a 33' Rockwood. I use a 2009 Duramax 2500HD for my towing.

We had a 31 ft TT with Equalizer hitch. Pulled it a few times and the final time was to Louisville from Atlanta last year to the RV show. Traded for a 2011 Outback 36ft 5er and WE LOVE THIS RV. Sooooo EZ to handle from hook up to parking. We are not "spring chickens" any longer, me being 68 and the wife being 35 (at least thats what I tell her how old she looks).

Been to FL twice and heading for 2 months in AZ mid January.

I will reserve specific comments to those who have an RV similar to yours.

We pull with a 2008 Dodge, 6.7 turbo diesel and have to look in the mirror to remember that thing is back there...gonna LOVE IT... PERIOD :bdance:

Congrats on the new trailer, you will love the 5ver, Outbackmel is right, so EZ to handle, the only way to go as far as I'm concerned, been puling 5vers and goosneck horse trailers all my life and you do forget there behind you, the ride is so smooth without the tugging and pulling when going over a rough road. You can also jacknife and get into tighter spots than a bumper pull, will not tail sway as much as a bumper pull when wind is blowing or semi truck passes etc. One thing you have to watch out for is they will cut a corner a little more so swing wider around those sharp corners in town, campgrounds, going around anything when truning, of course you probably already found that out when towing it home. My wife and I are both looking forward to traveling with the 5er. Our first trip will have to wait till summer. Right now it is parked winterized in the pole barn. We will be going to the beach - back to Outdoor Resorts of America in Sandbridge, VA. We are also interested in going to Custer State Park, SD.

Can't wait to see how it pulls with my 6.4 liter 2009 duramax. The dry weight is around 9800 and has a hitch weight of around 1800. What concerns me a little is the length, 38', and getting into some state parks and campgrounds.

I think you will find that when hooked up it is shorter and much more maneuverable than your 33' TT was. Travel safely and enjoy your new 5er, Hank

Another thing to remember as you mentioned about the length, is the longer the trailer the more rear trailer swing you will have because the axels are some what centered under the unit to keep the tongue weight under control, although same thing goes for the bumper pull trailer but not as bad, don't worry you won't have a problem. As mentioned before you will LOVE IT:thumbsup: Your Duramax will do a great job at pulling with the 6.4 and with good fuel economy. Congrats on the new 5th wheel. We brought one this fall as well and it's our first one ever. Only used it once then put it away for the winter:( First time out was a pucker factor trip we reserve a site for our old camper which was 26ft and moved up to a 36ft and I had 3 poeple watching me back in. Had 2ft on each side. You have come to the right place these guys know what they are talking about here and can help with just about anything that comes allong.
