WH and I have started the fall travel plan, and we are heading over to Georgia. Dawsonville to be specific as hubby is a huge Bill Elliott fan. What other areas (excluding Atlanta) should we plan to visit. We love the outdoors, hiking and fishing.

Search through Atlas Obscura, and drill down into the different cities. See link below.

Also, I can recommend Savanna, and if you go there, check out the Mercer House where they filmed Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. If you don't know the movie look it up on IMDB.com

Two places we have gone multiple times are Savannah as well as Atlanta. When in Atlanta, we are visiting family but stay at Stone Mountain nice place to go. You are within driving distance of Atlanta but they have a nice campground with hiking/fishing/kayaking/etc all right there.

About an hour’s drive north-east of Dawsonville is the little tourist town of Helen, Georgia. It is a replica of a German village. Very tourist oriented and we do recommend it and the area. Www.helenga.org

Agree with Stone Mountain Park. About 1-1/2 hr ride from Dawsonville, mostly due to traffic. It can be an all day visit. Millionaires Row in Jekyll Island Historic District is very nice but over six hours away. There is a GA State Park campground on the island. (former GA resident)

100% worth checking out Helen for a day. Plenty of solid hikes around there as well.

I don't think Helen holds good for multiple days though city wise.

We are 30 minutes north of Savannah in Hardeeville SC right now. I would highly recommend spending a weekend close to Savannah. Very fun city to walk around (as well as Bluffton).

Justin, you couldn't be more correct. After a day in Helen you won't have any cash left!
