Tires again

Well I am buying new tires.Thanks for the input on my other post. what are the best tires for me? My tires now are the orignal ST 225 75 R 15. The date number is 3512. We are heading to Destin fl. in early april and it seems to be the concensus that I need to replace them before I head out. In our town we have three tire stores, a Goodyear, a plaza tire who handles a variety of brands and an independant dealer that I have never dealt with. Thanks so much for you're help and patience. Our Fifth wheel is 6800 empty. Just Talked to Plaza Tire that I have dealt with for 25 years. They recommented a Summit 10 ply tire. What do you think?

For that size my vote is with the Carlisle HD. Maxxis would be the only other choice I would make with my current knowledge. I believe I've read that GY has come out with a tire made in the US but after all the issues they have had in the past I will have to give them some time to get a track record. You DO need to get some new tires though IMO.

Smart move on investing in new tires after the old ones have reached the ripe old age of 5 years. If they are Trailer Kings (or the like), they were rolling on borrowed time. Most likely you have LRD tires. If you want a bit more of insurance and safe margins, I would advise to invest in one load rating higher (LRE). A good quality 10 ply tire should give you 3 safe years of trailering. Tire shops can order in practically any brand if they want your business. Goodyear has a new ST line called Endurance, probably the only American made trailer tire. No long term reviews as they are new this year. Other reputable brands include Carlisle and Maxxis.

I did not know they had ST trailer tires. Maybe it's something new for them.

Their advertisement does not show their load range letters. The load index system they are using is not the official load capacity measuring medium for ST or LT tires. Kind of indicates they are new at describing ST tires.

However, they all have a 75 MPH speed letter (L) so they are up-to-date in that category.

Master tread made by whom? Never heard of them. Any reason you wouldn't
go with Maxxis or Carlisle like the posters recommended? If you are trying to save a few bucks, tires are not the category to start with.

For what it's worth, I just put four Carlisle HD 8 ply (65 psi vs 50 psi) on my trailer and paid $50/tire + $9 each for balance (don't recall what the mount fee was) from Wally World. My size is ST205/75R14, which is different from yours, but would it make that much of a difference in cost?

Looks to me like you're getting a pretty good deal CW charged me $111 per tire + $15 each for mounting and balancing. They matched DTs price at the time but the installation was more.

Prices due tend to be quite different not only for different sizes but different load ratings. Discount Tire is matching Amazon"s price for 8 ply Carlisle Radial HDs sized 225 75 15 at $62/tire. The 10 ply tire for the same size was $17 more.

I looked up the price for the 10 ply 225/75/15 and the price at Walmart did drop to $67. Great deal for sure. If you're local to a DT store, you might want to consider them as they price match and have a great tire replacement certificate for around $14 per tire. Just used it on one of my vehicle tires that I purchased recently from them after I ran over a pot hole. No questions or money's requested and I was in and out in about 15 minutes.

I won't try to sway you but we've got almost 5k miles on our Carlisle Radial Trail HDs and couldn't be happier.

I've had Carlisles on 2 of my 5ers, wouldn't hesitate to buy them again. Only problem I ever had is when I lost one due to a nail. This time around I decided to try a tire that my local discount tire store was selling because I could get an LRG tire for the same price as the Carlisle LRF. I'm a little nervous about the new tire, but figured I'd give them a try. They are made exclusively for DT and I have had some good luck with their exclusive tires in the past. We'll see how this goes.

I just ran a copy of walmarts add $61 for 8 ply and $67 for 10 ply. I do know that my local dealer can get either one or the Maxxis . I will go in tomorrow and see what they will do. I will not let our Walmart Mount or install anything. I can't thank everyone enough for your help.

I put 5 new Maxxis M8008 Load range E on the rig last week. $688 Mounted on the rig and balanced with new valve stems. $51 of that was taxes. Thanks to all who gave comments and advice.
