Our shower drains fine with the water off however when taking a shower, the water seems to rise because the water doesn't drain at the same level as the water coming out of the shower head. I have used enzymes to try and breakdown anything that could be holding it up. We also have stupidly been leaving the grey tank open trying to help the draining process and now we randomly get a foul smell from outside that waft into the RV and kids room. I have checked the batteries because it seems to smell like eggs but not as strong as we have had batteries go bad before. Going to check the batteries again today as I am getting distilled water to top them off just in case.

Starting to think there is always going to be something with this older RV.

Your shower does not have a "P Trap"... It uses a HEPVO valve instead. Essentially it's a "rubber balloon inside a PVC pipe"... Using enzymes, etc can cause that rubber balloon to become sticky and slow down waterflow through the HEPVO valve. Additionally, that rubber balloon is intended to close to prevent sewer gasses from migrating upstream and into the shower drain... Your comment about a foul smell with the gray tank valve open would indicate that the rubber balloon is not closing properly, possibly because it's dried out from the enzymes you poured down the shower drain ?????

I'd think it's time for a new HEPVO valve. Here's what it looks like and you can see "why it works and what happens if that rubber balloon is deformed or dried out" .... If you "go exploring" don't just take the existing valve out to look at it... Take photos of it before you touch it. It must go back in like it is right now. It's easy to install it backwards in some trailers and there's a 50/50 chance of installing it upside down if you don't pay attention to how it's supposed to be installed.... Note the 6 molded marks on one side...

Never leave valves "OPEN" when set up at camp.

Well, I leave my gray tank valves open almost all the time when set up in camp... I just route my sewer hose so it forms a "P trap" at the campground sewer fitting. Then, no sewer gasses can "flow up the hose and into the trailer"... You're correct, if you just "leave them open" you risk a problem, but if you adapt a solution, there's no problem with leaving the gray tank valves open. YMMV
