Slide out roofs

Depends on what year/make/model. Some have thicker roof decks than others

I would not walk on the roof of the slide outs. Unlike the Rv roof they don’t have the same support. The way to check the seals that I use is a ladder. Check each side and top from the ladder. Clean and lube from a ladder. I would never walk on them.

Test your slide out roofs and see if you can do it. Put some weight in the middle of the slide out and see if the roof is soft or firm. Add more weight and if it's still firm you are probably OK. As a last test, get up there and put your entire weight on the roof and if it's still solid, then you know.

As far as the slide itself not being able to support your weight on the roof? Well, that's no different than supporting your weight standing on the floor. More than likely, the roof is made of the same material as the floor (plywood). The walls are probably aluminum with Styrofoam.

Thank you I have a 23 Fuzion 373 fifth-wheel. Just went on the roof and really no room to walk on the slide out.

Thank you to everyone who shared ideas on my slide out. I went on the roof and found an electrical wire was lifting up the seal. I tucked it back under and hope that works. I did find it odd there was a wire that slides with the slide out.

Was this on the main slide-out and is it a cable-drive unit? On cable units, the motor and gearbox are mounted on the exterior wall of the RV in the center of the slide opening and the wires come out of the wall at a point a little further away and can sag onto the roof and move in and out with the slide. It is worth looking into because if it happened once, it will do it again and could lead ripping out the wires and rendering the slide inoperable (usually just when you need the slide to work).

On my Passport, I had a similar issue so while I was up there installing a drip pan under the gearbox (warranty issue) I secured the wires to the side wall and the motor housing and that solved the problem. Here are a few pictures of the before and after.

No, Mine was a blue wire on the outside of the bedroom slide under the seal. I am not sure what it is for. I didn't pull it out any further just tucked it back under the seal.

That's good to know, but you might want to look above the slide when it is partially or fully in and if you can see where the wire is coming from. Some of the smaller slides can be cable drive as well and the motor would be in the same location on some units (or twin motors in the side jambs like on mine). Either way, the issue is the same; a wire that should be secured up and out of the way is being dragged in and out every time you move the slide.

Thanks, There is still a small leak as it's raining today. I'm thinking it's coming in around the metal edging at the bottom of the slide. I will have to buy some chaulk and seal it tomorrow when it's dry outside.

I've posted on this before...but if it a leak you are trying to find you might want to look at the windows. This was my problem and visually they looked like they were sealed...but in reality were not water tight around the outer frame

Thank you I will look at that tomorrow. I was looking at the bottom side of the slide as the leak is on the edge under the bed.

Although mine was behind my couch...in the corner it was the same symptoms I had done all these things to fix the initial signs that were all off track. It was only discovered since I was sitting in a Florida thunderstorm and could see it live and inaction. It traveled (like water does) so there were 5 ft between the leak and the puddle!

Still looking for leak

Hello all,
I am still trying to find the leak in the bedroom. Does anyone know if I take the mattress off and remove the wood at the head of the bed what is under that? I am assuming access to the water bay and plumbing. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

I wouldn’t walk on it.
Put a ladder up to the side and reach over or go on roof and reach over to the slide. This should allow access to entire slide for inspection, cleaning or applying sealer.
If you have a particular area needing attention you could spread the weight by placing a 5/8” to 3/4” piece of plywood on slide. Depending on slide either 2ft or 3ft wide x 2ft or 3ft long.
Then climb up the ladder or access from the roof.

Toppers

If you do or don’t find the cause of the leak a slide topper may solve or prevent any future leaks keeping most of any water from saturating your slide roofs. It also permanently covers the top seals of the slides when they are in. Not sure how expensive they are as mine had them installed when I bought it. Just my 2cents
