We spent last week camping in Saugerties NY at the Rip Vanwinkle campground, a really nice campground! We attempted to eat lunch twice at surrounding towns namely Catskill. As always we had our dog with us. Restaurants with outdoor seating usually let our dog in, not in that area, in fact a couple of hostesses were downright nasty about it. Not a good area for dogs!!

Many state and local "sanitary codes" do not permit animals in eating establishments. It may not have been "a nasty about it hostess" but rather a hostess that didn't want to be reported for violating the sanitary codes and being shut down by the inspectors for violating the rules.....

Please remember that not everyone feels the same about dogs as you. Forcing your lifestyle with dogs is usually not met with a welcome.
I really don’t want to be eating with a dog underfoot.
It’s your business but please don’t force it on me.

We have done the same on many multiple occasions,... that being ... bringing our dogs with us to an eating establishment but sitting outside the building.

We've never been told "no" when sitting outside. However, if their outside eating area is enclosed (like a fence or a wall and you access the area through a gate from the outside or have to enter that area by passing through the building first, ... then "that" is pretty much the same as sitting inside the building.

If you want a good reaction from people .... well ... many years ago we had a pet chicken. She was leash trained, rode with us in the car, on bicycles, and went swimming with us. She was a remarkable chicken. The kids wanted to go to Dairy Queen. They had outside seating. We took the chicken with us.

Well, maybe it wasn't so much we had the chicken with us, as much as everyone was bewildered that she enjoyed Dairy Queen Ice Cream (vanilla).

I traveled with my pup for many years - she was a certified service dog. I took her everywhere with us BUT into restaurants or anywhere that we thought it would be offensive (generally)...and that was a service dog. We figured if the situation was such that we had to impose on others to have pup we needed to stay at home. Having had those experiences, and experiencing folks that bring animals into a restaurant/store that think they have such a wonderful animal, I've found that after having a trained animal then watching people with their "good" animals...I would just as soon not have them cavort around my table, snoot me, bark or sniff the food....and I love dogs to a fault.

Somehow, maybe I missed the memo, dogs have become something special and I'm supposed to go along with this. I've had a lot of dogs and have been really attached to many of them and they traveled around the country with me but they don't come in a store or restaurant with me.

I’d simply have had one of you ask in advance if dogs were allowed prior to sitting down outside .. we’ve had dogs for over 50 years.. our little mini travels everywhere with us .. if o don’t see a dogs allowed or pet friendly sign she doesn’t go inside. She enjoys Cabellas, Petsmart, and many others that slow pets

Get take out and find a shade tree. Our dog travels with us meaning we need to accomidate her as well. She really does not mind being left in the trailer at camp but that means cutting our day time explorations short sometimes so it's just better for all of us to take her out for the day... there really isn't a need for an establishment to be rude. Just tell us no and we will move along.

Without knowing what was said and how it was said I'll reserve judgement on "nasty". Having worked in the restaurant sector (deveopment side, real-estate & construction) I will comment on the animal being allowed or not. You only have a right to be accompanied by a certified, trained, service dog.

Allowing an animal into/onto the seating area can depend on a number of factors.
Is it allowed by local law/ordinances. Some localities distinguish between outdoor seating according to service. While it may be allowed if the food service is not full table service outside it also may be prohibited. It's been my experience that these ordinances are often governed by a single, or very small number of health inspectors. The restaurant management also has the right to refuse service to anyone as long as it's not descriminatory as defined by law.

I am not defending the town nor it's establishments. My comments are strictly in an attempt to inform the differences between circumstances according to location.

We have 3 dogs and would never consider taking them with us to a restaurant. I actually liken that to someone who is smoking cigarettes around me. It's just rude.
