Queen bed 2020 Raptor 415

Good Morning all,

I am at the final stages of deciding which camper I want to purchase. One of my options is the 2020 Raptor 415. The camper has the king mattress in the front which leaves literally zero space to get tot he left side of the bed to either get in it, or make it. It appears to me that it is still a queen size frame underneath it. What I am wondering is if this is actually the case, and if I can just toss a queen in there and forget that mammoth it has...

Don’t know for sure on your rig. But most campers that have a king size mattress you can remove it and use a queen. I know mine you can use a king or green. I have thought about changing to a queen for the same reason.

Our 2020 MHC came with a king. The pedestal fits a res queen with a few required mods IMO. When the king mattress was removed and a res queen installed (res = 60x80 - not a RV queen), the platform for it was just a little to big to me and left the corners where they could catch you. The platform was trimmed back on both sides on the bottom to eliminate that issue and fit the new mattress correctly. We had "some" room on each side of the OE king bed, and probably enough for some folks, but DW and I both like enough room to freely move down the sides vs "shuffle". With the proper tools cutting down the platform is quite easy - just have a vac around to clean up.

As a side not if you pursue this; we chose a regular residential mattress from Denver Mattress. I chose one I could try out in a showroom because I am particular about how/what I sleep on. The one that felt perfect was in fact too hard when placed on top of the RV platform. Apparently the mattress on top of the box spring in the showroom softens the feel of the mattress and when the box spring is eliminated the mattress then feels harder. We had to exchange it for the next softer design.

My last rig I pulled the queen bed and platform out and installed an adjustable bed from Mattress Firm. It worked great. The only problem was lifting the bottom of the bed to get to storage. Working around the framework was definitely difficult.

Every time I have upgraded to a res mattress I have replaced the gas struts with stouter pistons.

So I had a Res queen in my previous unit (I would take it with me but it was destroyed in a fire) It was a Purple brand, but very heavy.

Did you have to bump up the struts? Or add a support pole?

I responded in the post above. Yes those mattresses get heavy and I have always replaced the struts with ones that had higher pressure.

When I did likewise, I bumped up the struts to the heaviest they made. I ended up with a bed that "floated" on the road when the cover was closed, but still wouldn't stay up when raised. The strut end geometry was entirely wrong for the weight, and I would have had to move all the heavier strut-attachment wood around to get it right, trial and error. So I just gave up and made a capped PVC brace of the proper length which I stick under the lid when I raise it.
