Outside door noise

My outside door is equipped with friction hinges and it makes a loud scratching noise when we use it.

Is-there a way to fix that? I can’t figure how to get lubricant where it’s needed.

I sprayed silicone lubricant on all parts of the hinges and let it continuously soak down while i opened and closed the doors about a hundred times in a row somewhat vigorously like i was trying to stoke a fire…and it freed up and closes perfectly now…guess the lubricant found its way down into the hinge.

make sure your hinge isn’t binding though or you could damage the door

If you want to eliminate some of the friction and noise, look at each hinge and you will find a dimple on each. Try drilling out the dimple on one and see how it affects it.

If your friction-hinge door is any more than mildly stiff, address the dimples to lower the friction before you stretch your doorframe. It's all fun and games until your filon falls out.

How do-you adjust that? I don’t see anything adjustable.

With a drill, as previously mentioned. Crude, but necessitated by the design.

The "friction hinge" is a "good intentioned/badly designed" device. You can't "adjust it". What you do when it starts getting too hard to open, and before it damages your door, is "eliminate the friction part of the hinge" by drilling out the dimple to make the hinge "no longer a friction hinge"....

When my doors start squeaking and opening/closing hard, I just spray the hinges with WD-40. It will last for about a month, then need spraying again. We use our camper full time. So the doors get used many, many times every day. It workes.

Actually, the "friction" is not so great any more (maybe too much WD-40). When the wind blows, the doors slam shut. So, I finally installed the old-fashioned door catches on the side of the camper for each door. I hook the doors now when we want them open. Wind is no problem any more!

I agree, those doors were a good idea, but a bad design.
