Mattress

Boy, that's a wide open question. I think each person has some sort of preference. We like comfortable, quality and longevity. I refuse to pay big $$$ for a name, on anything, and instead look to the qualities that let us sleep well. Used to buy Beauty Rest, Stearns Foster or Simmons. A big selection was usually hard to come by so last 2 times we went to Mattress Factory. They have all sorts of brands, all sorts of beds set up etc. We have now bought the last 2 mattresses for our RV from them. They have from cheap (don't) to mid price to more expensive. We have been really happy. We won't do the foam mattresses and like the pocket coils. Everyone is going to have their different preferences but that's what we're doing at the moment.

We recently (a few months ago) bought a Bear mattress for home and love it so much that we started looking into options for the camper even though ours is decent. We have a short queen in the camper so that adds a limiting factor. Bear doesn't’ have a short queen, but they are the same company as Helix and Brooklyn Bedding and they do. I have heard and read very positive reviews from Brooklyn, so that is my suggestion, and what we will probably go with ourselves.

I have always advised on any RV related forum that when it comes time to replace the mattress in the camper, the best starting place for a new one is to get the same mattress you use in your house. (If you are comfortable with the one in your house).

We have always stayed with Serta's, but the last one we got was a Helix (about $1500 five years ago).

Note!.... if you spend a great amount of time in your camper, more than in your home, then don't cheap out and get an el-cheap-o mattress because you feel ... "It's JUST the camper. It doesn't have to be a good one or an expensive one." .... WRONG! You are sleeping on it and you are spending (approximately) 8 hours of your life (1/3rd) of your day on it. Why should you spend that much time on something that is not comfortable, causing you to wake up with aches and pains in the back, and feeling tired all day because you slept bad. No... get something comfortable, relaxing, and something that will truly give you a good night sleep. You will not regret it! (Neither will your back). And "expensive" does not always equal "comfort!"

The advice to get the same brand mattress as in your home is solid. We bought our home king size from Billy Bob's Beds in San Antonio. Bought the same for our camper (regular queen). We didn't take the mattress that was in our camper when we picked it up. Told the seller to toss it as it was a factory and not good shape. We have since replaced the home mattress with one of those foam jobs that come in a big plastic wrap and unfold when opened. My daughter has this one and recommended it to m wife and we like this one. It is real thick. and is considered firm. Mattress buys are like motor oil; whichever a person uses will become their favorite as it reflects their buying choice and is probably not the favorite of the the next guy.

We went with Wilderness RV Mattress (wildernessrvmattress.com). Outstanding mattress - they will make one to your specs if you need a non standard size.

That's like asking "what beer should I buy?" Dutch's post on sticking with what you know/like is the best advice.

Yep, what works at home will be the same in the RV. Like Danny and his wife, a bag of foam rubber just won’t do. Even the mattress toppers in motels have us sweating in bed.

Thanks all...I have a memory foam at home that wold double the tounge weight in the trailer. Also it's a weird size so will need one made for an rv. I've never measured the existing one but there really is no room to make it longer but at 6'4" tall I'm use to my feet hanging off the end..

I'll look at Wilderness and Brooklyn.

GF is trying to find the info on the guy that made our custom size mattress for the cruisers aft cabin but no luck.
