Traveling to Jacksonville, NC in June from Stonington.CT. Figure on two day trip, with stop somewhere half way, near Baltimore. Looking for ideas.and suggestions, based on experience. Routing around Key bridge, 39’ fiver with propane, 13’5” clearance.
Thx

Routing around Key Bridge?? …..Yeah there isn’t a Key Bridge anymore but i guess you know that…coming from Up North you will go around the Baltimore Beltway towards Towson MD …it’s the first exit past MD route 43 and just stay on there until you see 95 south after about 16 miles or so…Elk Neck state park is about 300 miles from Stonington if you need a place to overnight…Nice state park and you can drive into the little town of Northeast MD for dinner

I would route around BAT/DC altogether. Catch rt 1 south in Deleware (toll) and follow it until it turns into rt 13. That takes you down to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnels. Rt 17 from there on.
If you've never traveled I95 below Deleware it's usually one long (~150 mi) traffic jam from I695 & I95 to Richmond, VA. Summer can be brutal with folks heading to the Atlantic shores from the "Jersey Shore" south to Myrtle Beach, NC.

Well well….well……didn’t want to do it …but you forced my hand on this one Marshall……i just reported you to the MD office of tourism and visitmd.org……I will expect your container of Old Bay and crab tongs on my desk 1st thing Monday morning

No LP restrictions other than the tank valves need to be turned closed. Same with the Hampton Roads tunnel. Sometimes they'll have a sign out to pull in the weigh station and they'll stop you and ask if they are closed. The 2 tunnels in Baltimore are very strict about no LP bottles.

They will have to pry them from my cold dead hands!:hungry:

If only DW and I were able to sit down in some dark, ratty-looking beer joint in Maryland, spread the newspaper out on the table and order up two cold Yuenglings. And then order up a dozen steamed Maryland blue crabs!

Our oldest boy was stationed out of Newport News, VA for a few years so we used to make the trip often from New England. We would go down the NJ Turnpike to US-13 and South over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and typically camp in Virginia Beach for awhile before heading down into the Carolinas. Propane is fine as long as the tanks are turned off. Really not an issue for us, especially now that our fridge is 12v DC. I had, and still have, no desire to navigate through the Baltimore and DC areas towing a large camper.

For our trip in a couple of weeks we are going further West before we head South to explore the mountains in West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia.

There are plenty of them around here! I just read an artical about blue crabs invading the Mediterranean. Likely dropped off from a ships ballast tanks the EU is spending 10 million Euros to "fight them". If they paid my airfare and hotel bill I'd gladly bring my tongs, steam pot, Old Bay and mallets with me and help out. 😀

One of the best conversations I’ve seen on this forum. I agree with routing down through Delaware route 1 to 113 to 13. Around Baltimore is terrible, roads and traffic. There are plenty of campgrounds and a few Harvest Hosts in MD/VA. If you need a recommendation for a campground, we camp on the MD/VA peninsula often. Down through NJ and DE as well. Plenty of blue crab and oyster places in MD and VA too. Height restriction on Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is 13’6”.

FWIW - I know I'm coming late into the game here, but I hate I-95 either towing or just driving. When we go down the eastern shore, from Avon, CT - I'll take 84 to 684 in Brewster, NY then down 684 to White Plains. Get on to 287 to the Garden State Parkway. Take Garden State to I-295 in NJ and take that to the end (Right at the Delaware Memorial Br.) Then I take the first exit and take US-13 all the way down the DelMarVa. We stop at Lake Somerset Family CG in Westover, MD. Great Campground, pull-thru sites. It's a long drive for day 1 (387 miles), but with an early start and easy set-up we're out first thing in the morning. Less than 100 miles from Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. I travel with the propane off anyhow (12v refer) - They've never asked to inspect.

If you go down west of Annapolis, I go west on I-84 to I-81S in Wilkes-Barre, PA to go south (did I say I hate 95?). Then I would suggest either Echo Valley CG in Tremont, PA or further down - Western Village CG in Carlisle, PA. Then in VA you can take I-64 southeast to Richmond and then 95  south to Petersburg and then just pick up I-85s. I don't think there are any tolls that way

Just my 2 cents, but I hate sitting on I-95.
