How to mount a backup camera

I'm not talking about wiring it, just how to physically attach it to the back of the trailer. Last time (2014 Hideout) I put butyl tape between the camera bracket and the siding, then covered the seams and screws with Dicor lap sealant. Now Keystone has a web page with instructions (How to Install a Backup Camera in Your RV: Step-by-Step Guide) that says "Secure the Camera: Use the screws provided with the camera to secure it to the wall."

So my question to those who have done this, do I skip the butyl tape and just Dicor the screws and all around the bracket? Or is butyl still a good idea to prevent leaks?

I did both butyl and silicone sealent. Can't hurt, and you don't want leaks.

If you use Dicor make sure it’s the non self leveling. We use RV rated silicone sealant.

When I installed mine, I completely covered the base of the camera mount with butyl. Then put it place, then inserted the screws. In this case, "more" will not hurt anything. You absolutely do not want leaks from rain.

On the newer units (at least on my 2024 Cougar), the mount is already there and sealed. You just remove the cover plate, make the wire connections and attach the camera to the pre-installed mount.

Of course this only applies if you buy the compatible camera from Lippert/Furrion. Otherwise, remove the existing bracket, clean the surface really good, apply butyl tape, mount new camera/base, remove any excess butyl that squeezes out and then seal around the perimeter and screws with some Geocel ProFlex RV sealant (comes in different colors).

Full disclosure; I don't have a rear camera, nor do I intend to install one, but did take mine apart to see how it would work if I were to ever change my mind.
