We're heading to CC Colorado in Sept. Starting off in KC area stopping in Oakley, KS for the first night. How bad are the grades from CO Springs to CC?
We found a great Campground just on the edge of town and landed the outside spot for a mountain view.
Not worried we can't do it just curious.

Thanks!

My SIL & her DH live in Divide. He says she paved the streets in town with all the quarters she put in the slots there:LOL::LOL:

We're limiting ourselves to 1 day visit to the slots! Now my BIL and SIL are going and staying in the resort hotel. He'll want to live the whole week in the casino! His track record isn't very good either!

I you beat the house you may end up in one of the old gold holes. You'll understand that when you get there. The miners made the hills look like giant prairie dog holes.

To an answer your question about the grades, nothing serious at all. The most you’ll see is from Colorado Springs to Woodland Park with a stretch of 45mph sharp curves.

Thanks Bryan! I did a google Earth run :D and that's the way it seemed. Appreciate it. Super excited to knock Colorado off the map!

Walking distance to the casinos I guess. There is also the Lost Donkey campground which is a few miles outside of Cripple Creek. I have never stay at either one.

Curtiscapk, the Muller State Park campground has good sites. You must get a reservation and a park pass on line. Most sites have water and electrical, but you have to use their dump site for sewer cleanout. Lots of trees, hiking, etc. Closer to the Springs than the other two.

Thanks for the info. Already have reservations though and SIL is staying at the hotel at RV park.

It’s Colorado. So not just the grades but the winding two lane roads through the passes and the traffic. I would pencil in some extra time. (You’re going to work for this one.)

I live in Woodland Park and am well familiar with the roads you'll be taking.

You'll be on U.S. Highway 24 heading west out of Colorado Springs. You'll pass by Manitou Springs and Cascade and through Woodland Park and Divide before turning south on CO highway 67 to go to CC. Highway 24 is four-lane divided highway from Colorado Springs to Divide. You'll gain about 3000 ft elevation by the time you reach Divide. That stretch of road is called Ute Pass but it doesn't really compare to a lot of the mountain passes in Colorado. It's a fairly gradual climb with a few moderately steep stretches but nothing serious. The first few miles, from Colorado Spring to Cascade, is 45 mph twisting road that's very scenic. After Cascade there's a bit of a climb for a few miles but the road is fairly straight. Woodland Park is at 8400 ft elevation and the highway takes you right through the town and several traffic lights. Past that it's another few hundred feet up in elevation to Divide (about 9000 ft). Between Divide and Cripple Creek on highway 67 is very scenic, lots more twists and turns, and another 500 ft of elevation gain.

If your GPS alternatively takes you past Divide on Highway 24 and has you turning on Teller County road 1 in Florissant, the road between Divide and Florissant is also fairly scenic with lots of curves and reduced speed. Teller 1 is a decent road but you'll do a bit of climbing as you get close to CC.

All these roads get a significant amount of RV traffic. Highway 24, in particular, is the main route to western Colorado from the Springs, and RV traffic is considerable during the summer--especially afternoons around the weekend. Try to avoid Friday afternoon going westbound, and Sunday going east. The traffic is manageable but you might find that getting through Woodland Park on a Friday afternoon will take a little extra time. Traffic returning to Colorado Springs on Sunday afternoon can also experience significant backups. If you have to travel during peak times, just pack your patience with you.

Feel like gambling? Take the Mollie Kathleen Mine tourout of Cripple Creek; descend down a shaft in an original elevator without walls. Tour guides are ex-employees, It is cold and very dark, they will find a gold bearing piece of ore for you. A memorable experience!

Wow this is Great! Thanks Dave! Coming in on Sunday Leaving Friday (reverse of congestion!) so we should be fine. Thanks again!

We start today! Taking nice and easy. We wanted to get started early so an easy 2 hour drive to first stop in Junction City. Oakley , KS tomorrow, then CC on Sunday.

We took a longer trip to TX coast last year this one will be a little higher!

Have a fun and safe trip! We used to spend a lot of time in that area - my uncle had a vacation home in Manitou Springs. We don't do gambling or casinos but there is a TON of sightseeing and history to take in. Have fun and don't lose your shirt at the casinos!

Only seemed appropriate….Levon Helm is the man!……. If you have a big screen and a decent sound bar or surround system you might want to check out the Martin Scorsese concert film THE LAST WALTZ…. great concert film…Also there is a Levon Helm documentary “Ain’t in it for my health” that’s pretty good

For those that don’t know this is the group “THE BAND”…..Bob dylan’s former backup band in the 60s before they went put on their own

I'm a big fan of Levon Helm and The Band. Watching him/them do "The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down" live on video is pretty good in my book.
