CAT Scale Tips...

Probably not a big deal just something I have never done. I'm heading out on a trip soon and the first overnight camp is real close to a Maverick with a CAT Scale. I plan to get the trailer set up at camp and run over to the scale. Fill the fuel tank and then run just the truck across. The next day when we leave I'll run across it twice. Once with the WDH unhooked and then again with it all hooked up.

I hope to come away with real measurement around weights and the WDH set up axle distributions.

Like I said, I've never been on a scale so just looking for tips on the process. I have the CAT app loaded and ready to go. I know not to dick around on the scale if there are others wanting to use it ( this one does not look like an area that would be real busy as it's not a big trucking route or a truck stop set up.

One variable will be the GF and dog. They will not be in the truck when I get the first weight without the trailer. Should I kick them out when weighing the next day with the trailer hooked? I really doubt the combined 140 ish pounds should make a difference............

Any advice is welcomed.

Pull on the scale slowly and stop gently pay attention to the axle locations on the scale segments. If you are doubtful park and walk over to the scale and scope it out first.

If you use the same scale, all "re-weighs" within a 24 hour time frame are $5 each. So, make sure you walk inside and talk to the scale operator on your return visit. He'll need to see your original weight slip to verify that it's a re-weigh and not a new weight that you're doing. Also, if the scales are not busy, once you get the rig parked and weight with weight distribution bars connected, if possible, do not move the rig, just get out, remove the tension from the W/D bars and leave them hanging. Get back in the vehicle and ask for the weight. Then just drive slowly off the scale and reconnect the W/D bars. That way you won't need to "make the circle" as many times. But: Don't do it that way if there's anyone behind you waiting for the scales so they can weigh. Talk to the scale operator, make sure they know you plan before you try to "wing it"... They'll work with you, but if they don't know why you're running around while parked on the scale pads, they do get annoyed and want you off the scales so you don't waste their time.

I was curious about removing the bars on the scale. It does not look like this scale will have an attendant unless it's the cashiers inside the convenience store. It's at a Maverick Gas Station. I'll figure out the best approach when I get there and will not be THAT guys jacking around on the scale while someone waits.

CAT has a smartphone app that lets you do the whole thing without operator intervention. It may even handle 24-hour re-weighs automatically -- I would expect it to, but I've never used that feature, as I don't often get to weigh near a campground.

Used the app today and scaled just the truck full of fuel and all the camping crap I carry.

Front 4680
Rear 3900
Gross 8580

Easy enough. Tomorrow I'll get a weight with the trailer ..

I did the retest with the app.It recognized the 24 window and prompted me to confirm if I was doing a retest. Props to CAT for making the process easy peasy.

I generally do 3 weighs per trip to the scale. Once in tow configuration, the next with the WDH bars disconnected, and the last with just the truck.

Get on and off the scale as quickly as possible. Pull off the scale before you do anything to your rig. Remember that for the truckers, this is their livelihood. Time is money for them. Be courteous and don't delay them unnecessarily.

Recent first time user. It did automatically, at the same site within 24 hours, if you login and use the same "Tractor" name/number ("Silverado" for me) and "Trailer" name/number ("Cougar" for me). My profile also has a payment method. Only reason I went inside was for the paper copy of the receipts. One is emailed you to also (assuming you provided an email with your profile info).

I watched a couple of youtube videos that helped a lot with general how-to tips (e.g., someone already pointed out, tow vehicle and trailer axles positioned on the appropriate segments).

You may catch flak if you plan on dropping your camper unhooking then hooking from truck stop and any truck driver that pulls into use scale. Drivers don’t have time to sit around for what you thinking of doing. Being sad pull on to scale there is a button to talk to office they will ask first weigh or re weigh.
