I've got a Costal LED flashlight with 3 LED's in it. It has a "stated range" of 180 meters and a lumen output of 150 lumens. I can count twigs on a tree across the field. There's warnings on it and on the packaging that it could cause eye injury if shined into the eye. It's only 5" long and 1" in diameter. Sold at HD for $39, I think it's a steal. It's amazing what has been accomplished in LED technology just in the past year. All the Michigan State Police "marked" cars have LED lights in the overhead and in the grill/tail deck. Those lights are unbeliveably bright.. As you say, they are designed for intermittent use, not steady use as we would need. I think we're only a step away from a much improved LED lighting function for RV's. But no question, the cost will initially be very expensive. As with Plasma, LCD and LED TV's, it will come down as availability increases.

But, I'm amazed every time I turn on that flashlight. And to think it runs for 5+ hours on 2 AA batteries. What ever happened to the 5 D cell maglights we used as "billyclubs" just a couple of years ago???

I do hope whoever posted that post will "fess up" and get us some links to the technology. I'd really be interested to see what's headed our way.
