Mine is plastic also, I hose it down on the driveway, comes out as clean as a plastic rug can.

Same here for the plastic rug. Got ours at CW and so far seems to be easy to keep clean. Having said that, all the campsites we've been to so far have been grass, paved or sand/gravel. I suspect when we get to one based on clay it might be a different story.
But we just hose it off over the picnic table, let it drain for a while and fold it up and toss it in the back of the truck.

We use simple outdoor carpet that cleans easily. My DH uses a PVC tube to roll it up and throw it in the back of the truck to come home. Our last camping trip it rained while we were setting down and it was full of mud. He just rolled it up, threw it in the truck and we brought it home. He pulled it out, waited for the rain to stop, hosed it off and it dries quickly, rolled it back up and stored it in the garage. We are just looking for something to keep the dirt out of the TT, this does it perfectly. We were able to buy the exact length we wanted.

Mine won't fit in a washing machine and even if it did it's too stiff to be washable in a machine. We just hang it over something and rinse it off. Had it for 7 years and it's held up fine. Got it at Wallmart.

We've got a 5' chain link fence. The awning mat has a "fold down the center" so we hang it over the fence, use the pressure washer to soap it up then rinse it off. In about 10 minutes it dry. We fold it back to original size, slide it back into the storage bag and toss it back in the front compartment.

We just hit ours with the hose and lightly scrub with a broom and hang it up to dry.

When you say "rug" is it actually carpet? If so throw it away and get one that is designed to be used outdoors, then as others are do, hose it off.
When I see folks using carpet for outdoor mats I think of the commercial of the guy in a carpeted shower, yuk!
