It's the hinge that holds the tailgate on, so well, yeah.

Is that just a replacement hinge or is there an additional shock/piston that goes on it too? It looks like the latter but I'm having a hard time telling from the pictures.

Yes, it is both. Hinge side looks similar to the standard hinge, but it goes through to the other side (behind the tail light). The gas strut mounts to an existing nut at the bottom of that chamber and then to the (silver) arm on the hinge.
It works on 2015-2018 F150s and the 2017 Super Duty. I am not sure about previous years of Super Duty. But I know it does not work on prior years of F150s.
EDIT: I got it for less, but here is a link. https://www.amazon.com/HC3Z99406A10A...+hinge+viscous

In most cases, you could just get a can of duplicolor and clear. For some reason, duplicolor doesn't make the Ford Gray
Love the slow opening!

Ford has a torque spec for every fastener on every vehicle. I'd go broke or have to charge 3 times the price torquing normal fasteners

LOL! Yes, I think there are pages of torque specs listed. After looking at these particular fasteners, I thought it prudent. It looks like the nut type device (not really a nut) could be broken pretty easily. It is basically a threaded tube welded to a plate on the other side.

I had the DeeZee version on the old truck, but this is a much slicker design. The DeeZee kept breaking the nutzert and ball after the 1st couple of years. I always thought the cble was putting pressure on the DeeZee strut.

I went looking for one for my 2005 Silverado and could not find it.
Who is the maker of this unit ?

I have three torque wrenches, two Craftsman and a HF, the Craftsmans are 25 to 250 ft. lb. and a 25 to 250 in. lb., the HF is the famous 25 to 250 ft. lb., I use them often. Hand tight might be too tight or too loose.
As to the TG Damper, nice feature!!!

This one is a Ford Blue Oval factory part. I think you are stuck with DeeZee on the GM.

I've done this same mod as soon as I bought the trucks on the 2015 F-150, 2016 F-150 and the 2017 F-350 dually.
