Some outlets not working

I have a new Cougar 311res. Everything worked at the dealer when I picked it up. At home hooked up the power with a 50amp to 30amp dogbone, 30amp surge protector and a 30amp to 15amp dogbone. The microwave works, I think the frig switched to elec. and the GFCI works in the bathroom, but none of the other 110 outlets work. Noticed this because the TV’s don’t work. Checked the breakers. I saw a post about “losing” one leg of the 50amp. Is it possible that I lost a leg of the 50amp because of the multiple dogbones? If so, is this to be expected, or is something not wired correctly?

You should not lose any outlets on 15 amps.
1. Is there a reset button on your surge protector?
2. Try taking the surge protector out of the equation.
3. Is there a second GFCI? It should not affect your TVs but you never know.

Test each component of your dogbones with a voltmeter.

I'm sure others will chime in with good suggestions too. There is a lot of knowledge here.

I agree that you should not "lose a leg" by adapting down to a 15 amp circuit.
I do it at my Home all the time.

You say your model is a "Cougar 311res".
I wonder if the "res" part of that equation means "residential fridge"?
If so, that would mean your fridge runs on A/C power only, supplied by an inverter that is fed from your 12v batteries.
If you have an inverter, it may also power 1 or 2 plugs in your trailer as well.
That would explain why you have power in the GFCI in the bathroom.

If I had to guess, I would say you have no external power coming in from your shore power cable.

Check the house breaker first, then on down the line with a volt meter to see which component is failing.
Again, If I were to guess, I would place my bet on the surge protector, especially if it has ground fault protection, and your house circuit is mis-wired or not properly grounded.

If you are familiar with using a meter, with your rig power cord plugged in go to your power distribution panel and check for 110 VAC on each leg feeding the power distribution panel. While you are in there check/reset all breakers.

Does your 30 amp surge protector have any indicator lights? I'd start by removing that first and see what happens. Keep in mind that that you won't be able to run much more than the fridge on 15 amps.

Removed surge protector and no change. On the 50 to 30 dogbone there is no continuity between one of the 50amp legs and any of the 30amp legs. To try and explain better, on the 50 to 30, grd goes to grd, one flat pole on the 30 goes to one leg on the 50, the other flat pole on the 30 goes to a different leg on the 50, and the remaining leg on the 50 goes “nowhere”. Is that how a 50 to 30 dogbone is supposed to be set up?

May have found my problem. I found a diagram for a 50 to 30 dogbone and the two hot legs are jumped together in the dogbone on the 50amp side. My dogbone isn’t like that. Do you agree?

Do you have a 30 or 50A trailer? If using the 15A, to 30A dogbones to then convert to the 50A plug at the trailer the single hot lead from the 15A stays a single lead at the 30A but when it converts to the 50A plug the hot lead is multipled to both of the hot leads in the 50A plug. That gives you power to everything that is supposed to have 120vac but limits you to the 15A from the original plug. Is that what is happening?

Sourdough, Yes, that is what is happening.
Flybouy, the diagram shows the 'jumper' between the hot legs on the 50A side of the dogbone that my "dogbone" is missing. Guess I just bought a dog, not a dogbone.

Thank you all. Going to run out and find a dogbone that also connects the two 50A hot legs.
I'll let everyone know how it works.

Moral of the story is that if you need a 30A to 50A adapter, don't go to Home Depot and buy the first adapter with the ends that you need. I bought a Power Grip dogbone and everything works fine. Note: the hot legs on the 50A plug are jumped together, so you get 110 on each leg.

Yup, way better than chaining multiple adapters together. This is the one I use (same idea, slightly more space efficient):

I got this one a couple of months ago, way better than using 2 adapters with the 25' 50A cable.

I had a similar issue when I wired a 50 amp plug to my 30 amp cord. I ended up jumping the two hot legs together in the 50 amp plug. The house circuits are split and using both legs of the 50 amp. The 30 amp to 50 might not be wired correctly.

Before I jumped both hot sides in the 50 together only my bedroom AC would come on. *** Note *** don’t run both AC units at once on a 30 amp, it will trip!

I built the 30 amp to 50 so my propane generator can run either AC unit if needed...
