2-Axle Bearing RePack
local dealer wants $350 to repack bearings in my 2017 dual axle Outback. Seems high and contemplating doing the job myself.
What is the time commitment for this project. Never done it myself, so probably be additional time given that.

First you will need new seals, they are not reusable. Also need grease (1 lb. container is cheaper and easier to hand pack), as well as cleaners, etc. The time depends on your tools, your mechanical abilities, and your general health. I'd set aside at least an hour per wheel for time to jack it up, remove it, repack bearings, install new seals, reinstall the wheel and adjust the break shoes, and remove the jack and supports. The first one will be slower than the following 3.

thanks Flybuoy. So, if i decide to pay the $350, what should i make sure they are replacing? Just the seals?
I hate to be that guy, but i dont like to play around when it comes to wheels and tires.

Axle service should include inspection of all components. Cleaning all the old grease off the bearings, races and drum. Cleaning shoes, repacking heatings. New seals and adjustment of shoes.
Grease soaked shoes should be replaced.

The going rate around here is $225. If you're planning on doing this job yourself I'd recommend a bearing packer. Works really fast, does a good job and is a lot less messy!

Cost is about $25 and IMHO well worth it!
The packer, grease and seals can be purchased on Amazon. If you're into supporting your local automotive store they should have all 3 as well.

I'd guess you're getting that $350 quote from an RV dealership? You might want to find a "trailer dealer" (cattle, utility, etc) and ask about the price. Trailer axles are trailer axles, there is no difference, so anyone who works on any type trailer can repack them for you. Also, you might find a small automobile repair business that is looking for work. All "older vehicle front wheel bearings" are the same "engineering" as trailer axles, so if they can repack bearings on a 1980 Fairmont, they can repack bearings on your trailer.
That said, depending on your area and the "going shop rates" that may not be an outrageous price for the work and new seals. Around here, the shop rate is $85/hr and the job runs about $250. If the shop rate is $125 where you're at, then the quote you got is probably "in the ball park"...

Everyone forgot to mention a roll or more of paper towels a pile of rags and if you can find them, gloves. Lots of gloves.
3 years ago I had the nearby auto shop do mine for just under 200. When I do my own it is maybe 40 bucks for grease and seals and yeah 4 hours after cleaning up all the mess I make.

It is a messy and time consuming job for sure, but one I prefer to do myself after every major trip. Nothing is more important to me than tires and wheel bearings as we cross barren stretches of the country. If you’ve got a shop you absolutely trust that’s fine. But that’s one job I like to be hands on.
