propane conversion generator

I am considering a conversion of my 2 Honda 2000s
to propane.
One concern is fuel consumption on propane compared to gasoline.
I have been told that they’re different size jets for the propane, so do you need to change jets at higher altitudes like carbs on gas?
Any suggestions on conversion kits would be helpful.

Fuel consumption will increase and power output will decrease. Check your generator manual for exact %. Altitude will also reduce output.

propane conversion generator

None of the propane conversion kits I researched make mention of having to re-jet the carb.
This is the conversion kit I would consider if I ever do it.

Jeff, might we ask why you'd spend $600.00 to convert to a system using more fuel, less power, and less access in an emergency? The generator in our Suites is a 7000 watt propane-eating beast. When running on a hot day it will use so much fuel that we have to use a heat-blanket around the propane tank to keep the regulator from freezing up.
You won't see the freezing problem with the smaller generators, but they will flat out eat up the propane.

I'm not sure which "brand of propane conversion kit" you are considering, but here is the instructions from one brand. They list 5,000' altitude as the elevation for "rejetting to meet environmental standards" and state that when operating the generator below that altitude, rejet to original specifications to prevent damage to the generator from "too lean a fuel mixture"....

So, at least with this brand propane conversion kit, you'll need to rejet the generators.

As for fuel efficiency/propane useage, the attached chart from the same website: https://genconnexdirect.net/Lituratu...19r2.00_EC.pdf indicates about 12 hours on a 20 pound tank and 20 hours on a 30 pound tank at an 1800 watt load. Less load (fewer watts being used in the trailer) would mean a longer run time on the propane tank. How much run time, or how long a tank would last depends entirely on how many lights you turn on in the trailer....

Here's the charts and the comments about altitude rejetting.

It would be handy not needing to carry a gas can.

after studying this i think i will stick with the gas system but yes propane would be a lot cleaner and simpler. Maybe my next gen will be a dual fuel.

Not really "handy" when you have to carry extra propane tanks, or go find a propane refill station every day or two. Any generator, gasoline or LPG will require refilling/servicing on a regular basis. It's been my experience that it's much easier to find a source to refill a gas can than to find a source to refill a propane tank. YMMV

Kind of depends on how much you use it, I suppose.

I can't in my mind find a reason in the RVing world to convert a gen set to propane. Convenience to use from the onboard LP tanks? Sure, but at what cost? Decreased efficiency, power etc. The ONLY thing left is "convenience". Having spent many years running to and fro trying to get LP tanks filled, maybe not, wait till tomorrow etc. - and now the higher prices...I just don't see it for me - I've just not run across a place that doesn't have gasoline for sale within a reasonable distance.

each time i read the title to this thread ( Propane conversion generator) i can’t help but think of Flux capacitors or something from star trek that converts moon rocks to propane to power the photon cannon

or Marvin the Martian from looney tunes with the “ illudium q36 space modulator…to annihilate you

I installed LPG Onan's and inverters in my last 3 bumper pulls. Best thing I ever did. Push button start, run clean and last forever. I had a 2500 in my Jayco and upgraded to a 3600 for my Prowler. Transferred that into my Cougar and now in my Montana. You can find the 2500 micro's used for around $1500. You sacrifice some storage but if installed correctly worth it.
