Help! No heat

Help! 2021 Couger 316RLS. My furnace fan will start and then shut off. Furnace does not lite.
What can I check? Of course it happens in a snow storm in Victoria.

First thing to check is the Sail Switch. It's a common problem. A little lint can be blown between the contacts preventing ignition. If you have exterior access to your furnace it's a very easy thing to pull and clear. It's always possible that the sail switch is faulty but that's much more rare. Pull it, blow it out, reinstall it and try your furnace. There's also a Reset switch on the furnace near the sail switch that can automatically shut off if the furnace fails to light after 3 attempts. Make sure it's on as well.

Anyway, start there and let us know.

I have a large cover on the outside with the exhaust in the middle. Is this the panel I take off?

Thank you a ton! Took it apart and a piece of lint was stuck in the sail switch and the switch was tripped. Seems good to go.

It's the sail switch that's the problem, but it may not be "the switch's fault"...

The sail switch closes based on the fan speed (blowing air against the sail switch). If the battery is not fully charged, the motor may not be turning fast enough. Or, if there is lint/dirt in the vanes of the squirrel cage fan blower, then the fan may not be able to develop enough air movement.

So, even if the switch is working like it should, that same "part of the system" may still be the problem. Dig a little deeper to see if you can determine "WHY" the sail switch isn't closing the contacts...

If you're on "shore power" then you should have "full 12 volt power" but that doesn't mean that the full 12 volts is getting to the fan blower motor. Could be a loose/corroded terminal on the control board or a loose/faulty ground on the motor or on the control board.

Keep looking, it's in the sail switch circuit, but might not be the actual switch...

Are you on shore power? Are you using batteries only? If on batteries only, are they charged? Did you turn your propane on? If the propane is on, do you see a green or a red on the regulator?
If you see red, check to see if you have propane, and the propane valve is on.

Typically when a sail switch gets lint, animal hair, etc caught on the outside of the switch body the internal contacts can’t make full contact. What occurs then is a bit of arcing across the contact points due to poor mating of the two surfaces.

Over period of time the faces of the contact points get pitted to the point they no longer can complete the 12 volt circuit.. hence furnace cycles 3 times and goes into lockout mode.. because the sail switch fails to complete the circuit

Here is a video I made a while back showing you what happens and also a few internal views of the contacts and such.. many folks try to spray contact cleaner, etc on the outside body of the switch to correct the issue

This May or may not work and even if it does the problem will return again ..you can’t get the contact points clean by spraying anything on the outside body of the switch
