Changing generator- fuel type and wattage
I’m about to purchase a 2010 fuzion 393. I’m going to be adding a compressor that requires more power than the one that comes with trailer. I’m wondering if I can replace the current gen which is gas with a much larger diesel gen and then use the onboard fuel tank for diesel.

You are going to use a compressor and need a larger/more powerful generator? Are you going to try and install a 240V generator to power this big compressor or stay with 110V. How many watts does your current generator have as running watts?

The new gen would be 240v. The compressor is 240v. I believe the one that’s in it is a 5500. The new gen needs to be 10,000 or larger.

Have you looked a the size of a 10K watt Onan diesel gen? It’s probably NOT going to fit where your current gen sits.

It may be more economical to buy a gas fueled air compressor.

if you want 240 volts you would have to rewire the toy hauler because the original genset is 120 volts…then you would have to re plumb the fuel tank because it would most likely need a return line and the weight of a 10 k diesel gen is about 800 lbs compared to 288 lbs of a gas 5 kw…probably need to beef up the frame where it sits …diesel gen is about $10000
really doesn’t seem practical. better off getting a large standalone gas gen on wheels to keep in the toy hauler just to start the air compressor but that seems like overkill as well
what are you trying to do with this air compressor? are you a contractor? and it’s for a specific job task?

Could I get say a gas fueled gen that fits in another storage area, connect it to fuel tank and put them in parallel?
I was just hoping I could have one gen. I thought when looked the other day I found a onan gas 10k of almost the exact same size as the 5500 but now I can’t seem to locate it.

this is much cheaper and you could use it at home also during emergency

I’m making this toy hauler an airsoft rig and airsoft field office. We will use it to travel for airsoft events but also for our field for taking money, carry merchandise, charge barriers, and fill compressed air tanks. The compressor requires a lot of wattage to start. It’s a 4500 psi compressor.

Just an off the wall sort of way to look at this. You might be able to simply swap out the motor on the high pressure compressor to a 120 volt motor. If there is a belt between the motor and compressor end it might be easier than you think. If it is a coupling it's just a bit more involved but still doable. Industrial motors generally conform to accepted size and configuration standards. Shaft diameter, length, motor size and length, attachment size and configuration. Frame number. In this case Grainger is your friend. They have a replacement motor for virtually ANY motor. IF your Onan 5500 can get it started on 120 volt. A soft start capacitor might help there. Another possibility would be changing the drive ratio if it's belt driven. Higher ratio could provide easier start at the expense of longer fill times. There is one more possibility to check. Your motor might be capable of running on 120 volt . Many industrial motors have the ability to run on either voltage by connecting wires in the connection box differently. That would show on the data plate or inside the box.
I'm sure that was enough to confuse you even more.
