RV Show With Factory Direct Pricing...

I’m disappointed after attending a so called RV Outlet Show that was supposed to have factory direct pricing. Upon entering the county fairgrounds and seeing the name of one of the country’s largest dealers, we should have turned around and went home. This was not a factory outlet show; it was sponsored by a well known dealership that we’ve walked away from in the spring. I thought we would be dealing directly with factory reps, but this was not the case. There were no other dealers there.

We figured as long as we were there we might as well continue on in and see if there would be any difference in price and sales tactics that we experienced in the spring. The faces were new but the crap was still the same. We were met by a very likable fellow who claimed not to be a salesman; he was a technician that was helping out at the show. We spent a considerable amount of time with him going over a camper we are interested in buying. He had us sold on this model, and we were looking to purchase it until it came time to meet the manager.

Things went rapidly downhill from there. First red flag was when we met the manager; he was in the middle of eating his lunch at his computer. He wanted the tech to take us and buy us lunch then come back to work out a deal. We refused his offer but came back as we liked the young tech and promised to meet back with him. The second red flag was when the manager claimed to be a family-oriented man and cares about all of his customers, but I’m thinking until the sale is final then I don’t matter anymore. I heard that story before.

The manager gives us a quote, and it’s not much different than the quote we got at the dealership in the spring. So this special factory direct pricing show was just a come on. The final red flag was when we wanted to take a copy of the quote home to talk about it. He refused to give us a copy and then brought in another manager. At this time the DW is ready for battle and beginning to lose her pleasantness. Needless to say we didn’t buy a new camper.

In the quote we were given the dealer wanted to charge $2500 for destination fee and $1900 for dealer prep . Elkhart, Indiana, is less than 200 miles to northeastern Illinois. For that much money I’d go get it myself if it was allowed. What I learned from this RV Outlet Show is that you cannot buy an RV directly from the manufacturer because they are not licensed to sell them. This come-on show was deliberately misleading . There won’t be a new camper for us because we won’t do business with the country’s largest dealership or the other dealership that camps in its own world.

Not sure what you really expected, but it sounds like it all went down exactly as I would have thought.

I don't know of any RV manufacturers that sell directly to the public.
Not any different than going to Ford or Chevy and trying to buy a new vehicle.
You can't do it, as you must go through a dealer.

Your problem lies with the dealer, and as you already know some of them (especially the ones I think you are talking about), are just in it for high pressure sales tactics.

You just need to find a better dealer.

Curiosity has me wondering if you really thought that the manufacturer would sell directly to you. Who would do your warranty work? What dealer would sell a brand of RV which could be purchased directly from the manufacturer?

I wouldn't expect "factory" price but at a special show, I would expect some "closeout" or special pricing to "move" out some units. Maybe some dropping of the prep fees and or destination charges if that's even all the discount they're offering. We don't have that particular "big guy" here but do have a different big guy close. They will come to the state fair here along with a local and both places do seem to have some good pricing at the fair. Better that what I thought when we have looked in the past. Therefore, yes, I would expect some sort of discounts at a "show" like that. But, that particular big guy, if I know who you mean, are specialists at the tactics that don't save you money but make them more. Unsuspecting or even more vulnerable, people who don't look around and impulse buy, have made them that "big guy" and thats who they target. It's kinda sad.

Well to be honest, I thought that since this event was advertised as an RV Outlet Show factory direct there would be factory reps there to talk to about dealing directly with the factory. That's what I went there to find out about how this could be possible. There was no mention about it being sponsored by any dealerships.

As far as warranty work would go I was thinking it would be handled by the factory. I was just looking for an alternative to avoid the hassle of doing business with dealers whose practices border on the shady side of being legal.

The so called largest care about you dealers have numerous lawsuits pending against them for warranty and terms of contract issues. I don't want to get into those headaches and maybe it was just wishful thinking on my part.

There are other RV dealerships besides the one that disappointed you so much. I think everyone knows which one you are referring to.

Just a suggestion, but have you checked into Bish RV's. They have 20 different locations across the USA now. They just recently bought out Modern Trailer in Anderson, Indiana. So far, from my personal experience with them, they are by far much better to deal with than "that other company." Yes, we all know who you are referring to, we got the hint!

I wouldn't buy a screw from camping world if they were the last retailer on the planet.

Yes I would buy a screw from Camping World. With my discounts I usually get good prices for accessories. A trailer! Now that's a different story.

Sounds like the dealer is just playing word games to scam the public...nothing new there.

I'm looking forward to the RV shows coming up around here this fall and spring...that's where we bought our first RV...we saved about a grand for showing up What a great way to spend the day though...checking out all the incredible RV's and price tags Maybe thinking/dreaming about trading in the pick up and RV for a Class C...what a great way for this not too old yet couple to hit the road...pulling over is an easy snack and nap, bathroom breaks are like at home, and backing in is a non-issue

Factory Direct Pricing is just a "hook" to get you in there. We only attended the shows to review the models and floor plans. You can get an idea of the prices, but the dealers pay big bucks to attend these shows. Then we go to the appropriate dealers after the shows to make a real deal. It is always better than the show price.
