Awning replacement DIY?
Power awning is starting to tear, its 9 years old.
Anyone DIY or is this better for a dealer to do?
If I do it, any brands of awning better or to avoid?
I'm 60 and somewhat handy but not a pro.

You ask, Is any brand of awning better or to avoid?
Are you intending to replace the entire awning or just the fabric ???

My wife and I replaced our awning fabric in a couple hours last week. It probably could be done by one person with a lot difficulty.
Depending on your work area, you may need multiple ladders and should go into it expecting to do a lot of climbing up and down. You may also need a drill with nutdriver(s) and drill bits, hacksaw/ sawzall, pliers, and a couple ratchet straps to relieve the tension from the struts.
A magnet is handy for finding the little thin tension washer that we inadvertently popped off the top awning arm pin with the ratchet strap

With two people it’s not a hard job. If you extend the awning all the way out, there is a tag with all the information to get OEM fabric. If you want a generic fabric you need to know the length of the original.

Try looking at ShadePro.net. You might have to get one that is a foot or so shorter. Ours is shorter from our previous RV. Still works well.

You can replace just the fabric as long as the mechanical parts are still in good shape. I've not done it but it doesn't appear that it would be a difficult job.

RecPro RV Awning Fabric is an awesome replacement for our RV that I found in this article. Everything fits perfectly and materials are of high quality. The material is easy to clean and has a nice design. I recommend leaving awning open for a day to relax the material and rid it of creases.

Two person job for sure but really not that difficult. Like others have stated, there's lots of youtube videos showing how to do it. I watched a couple of videos from RV dealerships showing their technique and it worked flawlessly.

Let me just add that I had my awning fabric replaced about 4 years ago as it was tearing in the usual spot where the sun always hit it. About 6 months later the motor got really slow so replace that too. You might consider doing both at the same time and being done with it. Just sayin.....

Hey Greggde check Vista Shade by Shade-Pro, they have 8' and 10' ones that should work and they zip on like the Carefree E-Z Zip blocker. We have 2 of the ez zip blocker shades and love them they are easy to install and use. They are great for keeping lots of sun off the rv on hot days. We usually put ground stakes in about 3' from the end of the awnings so the shade is off the ground at an angle which creates a nice circulating air movement. Enjoy

Our last 5th wheel had 2 awnings, the main awning & 1 on the slide, that we had the Vista Shades on both, absolutely awesome. The best part is you leave the top portion attached to the awning so there was always an extra bit of shade anytime the awnings were deployed.
