New with a question about tires

Hello,

I just moved from having multiple class A's to a 5th wheel (montana 2880) and I am in need of tires as it's got 4 different ones on it now.

My question is, does anyone know of a 15" tire thats higher than a D rating for weight. The 5th is 9800+ dry and I think 12800 loaded max. 4 D's are only good for around 10000. I am trying to avoid going to 16" hubs and wheels if at all possible.

Thanks for any insight.

Maxxis, for example, is one of several tire brands that have an E rating for their 15in tires. They are quite a good tire and a number of members here have used them and are pleased with the results. If you do a Google search (15 inch E rated RV tires), you will find a number of others for you to consider.

MAXXIS produces a tire that meets your needs.

I have them on a single axle utility trailer that sits more than it gets used. The tires are 4 years old, have held up well, no weather cracking, even wear, remain inflated with no problems since purchased. I'd recommend them.

Please note that the max PSI on some wheels is 50PSI and on others it is 65PSI, so if you should decide to go with these tires, make sure your wheels are rated properly for 80PSI.

Here are the specs on the M8808 ST Radial in size 225 75R 15

Part Number TL15713000

Size 225/75R15

Ply Rating 10

Diameter 28.3

Width 8.90

Load Rating 2,830

Max PSI 80

Tread Depth 9/32

Sidewall BSW

Don’t forget that you can subtract pin weight from your total so you know what the tires are supporting. The MAXXIS tires stated above just fall short of 12,000 lbs.

As if that’s not enough to think about, not all tires are supporting the same load weight due to weight distribution. To be fully informed, you’ll need to weigh the loaded trailer.

Thanks for the info on maxxis. It never occurred to me about subtracting pin weight. That at least gets the dry weight back into D range.

Also note you need to find the rating on your rims. Not good to overload them either. Usually stamped on rear, or in valley UNDER the tire.

Tire rating

OK, I understand subtracting pin weight when looking at tire ratings, but what about times where the 5er is parked? All the weight will be on the tires and may not be symmetrically distributed if one is using pads to level the trailer.

Certainly you won't have the heating and dynamic loading issues that you have when going down the road, but is it a consideration if you are running close?

Thanks,
John

If your fiver is parked, the pin doesn’t magically hover (I own an unmagical TT, so I’m not absolutely positive on this one). When parked, you have the landing gear which takes on the pin weight, and then some, since it’s placed back a little farther than the pin.
