Truck Stop Gasoline

Truck stops have fuel pumps for cars and for the 18 wheelers. I'd like to use the 18 wheeler pumps when towing the TT because I can't always fit at the car pumps. The fuel pumps for the 18 wheelers have diesel, do these 18 wheeler pumps also have gas for my F150? I've never pulled into the 18 wheeler pumps before.

The truck lanes do not have gasoline. I look for stations large enough to accommodate our truck and 5th wheel. Some stations have RV lanes that will have gasoline.

Thanks guys, that's what I needed to know. It's often difficult at regular gas stations to pull in with the TT. I guess the bigger Truck Stops might have larger gas lanes which would be helpful.

Most of the Pilot and Flying J truck stops have RV lanes with gas and diesel pumps. Unfortunately, at least for me, it seems they either aren't clearly marked or I just can't see the signs, so I usually don't see those RV lanes until I'm pulling out of the truck side after splashing diesel on the side of the truck and my shoes.....

Keep in mind the price of fuel at truck stops is usually significantly higher unless you have a fuel savings membership card. I usually try and fill up my truck without the fifth wheel the night before I leave on any one leg of our trip to cut down on truck stop fill ups. This way I save a little money and can fill up easier

I use diesel and the truck lanes for the most part because I use the TSD Logistics Card but, sometimes there is not a Truck Stop available that accepts the card along my route so I use regular stations. What I do is I plan out my stops a day or two before traveling. I use the Gas Buddy app to find stations along my route and then using Google Maps I look at the station from the Satellite view and then look at photos that have been uploaded to get a idea whether or not I can get in and out of a particular station.

One of the woes of owning a gas truck!

Stick to Love's, T/A, Pilot, Flying J etc. and hold out for an end spot if able. Unfortunately, it seems most all 'modern' stations like these 'travel centers' are oriented so the pump lanes face the store so you will still need swing room to avoid the store parkers.

All days are 'two fill up days' for us. I always fill up in the morning of travel, or the night before (if a multi-day stop) without the trailer, and then do one stop en route to my next location with it hooked up. This limits any potential stress.

If you download the Pilot/Flying J app, you can filter the list by those stations that are 'RV friendly' - these typically have dedicated RV lanes. I've found they are generally off to the left side of the main gas pump area as you pull in. However, we don't go out of our way to look for them - I think well less than 1/2 the stations have them.

I've found that most (but not all) travel center type places off an interstate will be of the larger variety, but if you want to be sure, many people use Google Maps satellite view to scope out a station ahead of time to check the layout for easy in and out.

I've been doing exactly as you mention; using Google Maps at gas stops to make sure I can navigate to the pumps. What did we do without Google Maps?

Interstates have the nice, big, truck stops, but the back roads not so much where local 7 Elevens are it. Even the interstate truck stops can be difficult to navigate as John mentions above.

you could always just fill your pickup bed with gasoline and transfer it to your tank when necessary…like this guy did lol

Interesting idea, but the last thing I need is more load.

Although I didn't have a choice other than a Ram 2500 with the hemi or cummins, I bought the cummins and really do love it. However the tank on these things are something like 26 gallons. Although I can retrofit it with a new 60 gal tank, I don't want to fool with payload. My next truck will certainly be a 3500 and it will have either a larger tank or it will be my first retrofit for about $1300.

For all the reasons previously stated filling up pulling a 37ft trailer is a pita unless planned out. Diesel makes this easier. We usually travel about 6.5-7 hours of driving "per trip leg". I have found that if I fill up before hookup, start looking for fuel once it hits a 1/4 tank then we have enough to our next stop. There was one time in the last 3 years that we actually had to disconnect the trailer in a store parking lot, drive across the street to fill up as our planned stops had pump problems....and we could find NOTHING that we could maneuver into. Disconnecting and filling up was faster than continuing the search. With the 60 gal tank there would really be no 'in travel' stops'.

I do have a 36 gallon tank, which is wonderful. But when my gas mileage drops from 20 to 10 miles per gallon it doesn't go as far as I would like.

If you download the Pilot/Flying J app, it will tell you for every station on your route whether or not the station is "RV friendly," meaning that it has separate larger lanes for RVs with gas as well as diesel. I use P/FJ more often than I otherwise would, because as a Good Sam lifetime member, I get 5 cents off per gallon on gas, which is often enough to make them competitive pricewise in an area, and I know it won't be a hassle snaking around tight pumps.

Lately found more stations using Upside than my TSD card. Actually used the Upside more than the TSD in our annual 4000 miles for winter from MN to AZ and wandering back. Upside gives cash back on every fill and adding stations all the time. If you want to give it a try go to upside.com and use my discount invite CODE LARRY33633 and your first fill will give you an extra 15 cents rebate in addition to the regular. Kind of a pyramid scheme type thing that also give me a bonus for you filling up. Cash back is actual cash you send to yourself.

Be careful so look at total cost. IE we have 2 Casey's close to us. The one has low price but gives a penny and the other has slightly higher but gives 14 cents so it is 3.65 for D and the other is 3.94
