Virginia to Palm Springs California
Hello everyone. This is my first post so hope Im in the right place.
My wife I are are heading cross country from Virginia to Palm Springs California. We are planning on leaving December 26th and staying for 2 months.
Looking to get experiences from others traveling similar routes during the winter. We have been as far as Williams Arizona during the summer. We traveled route 40 with no problems. Was thinking this trip running route 10. Trying to stay in the warmer part of the US. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Ray

A few years ago we traveled I-10 from its beginnings in Florida and ending in LA. It was a great trip, stopping time in St.Augustine, Perry, FL, Cameron, LA, Houston, San Antonio, Las Cruces NM (White Sands), and Tucson. Great trio. Can't say how the roads are now.

I-10 is our home away from home. Road quality is extremely nice, except for a perennial stretch in western Louisiana that will break your buttbones, plus whoever is doing construction that season. And winter is definitely the time to enjoy the southern route. Foodwise, you get to enjoy authentic Cajun/Creole, Galveston seafood, BBQ, and classic Mex. And overnight stops in acceptable CGs are reasonably easy to find without advance reservations.

Good machines, I have replaced all the seals over the years. You are correct, a real pain!

I-20 out to I-10 in west Texas may save you a few miles. Weather is usually above freezing although both highways do ice over at times. When are you planning to travel?
Edit; My bad, I reread. Worst weather is usually February but December or even November can have bad days. But this southern route offers the best bet. Check weather forecasts and be prepared to lay over a few days if needed. It usually clears quickly, especially on the interstates.

We travel west every year from Hanover County. We usually go I40, but have taken I85 through Atlanta and caught I10 near Mobile, Al, as well as turning down I59 at Chattanooga to catch I20.
Not much to say except the difference being somewhat longer and usually warmer weather south. If you go I10 you should take a side trip and visit Big Bend NP. You should be able to un-winterize at some point along I10 depending on the weather forecast.
We stay around the Salton Sea each year and have friends up in Cathedral City.
Have a safe trip
