Problem unlocking my rv door

I used to have a Keystone 5th wheel. I now have a 2022 Passport

I had the same problem with my old one that I have right now.

I normally only lock the top lock in door. But, I had someone service my trailer and they locked both the top and bottom locks. I can't get the door unlocked. It feels like the top lock unlocks but not the bottom one.

Is there a trick to this?? I had it happen once with my 5th wheel also and don't know how we finally got in.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum

If you have the standard entry set the top lock is for the handle and the bottom is the deadbolt.

Deadbolt: insert key and turn to the right to unlock, left to lock. Turn key to vertical position when done.

FWIW, anybody with a “pass key” can get into your trailer unlocking the handle. Pass keys don’t work on the deadbolt.

Thanks

I am not there but will try to turn key to right on deadbolt. I believe I tried to turn it right and did not go there. Maybe I didn't try hard enough. I didn't want to break my key off.

Thank you for the quick response. I am going there on Sunday and will see if it works.

Does the key turn at all in the bottom lock?
It's a deadbolt, so it's a quarter turn and then return to upright to unlock, and a quarter turn the other way and then return to upright to lock.
(I discovered DW has been turning the key a quarter turn and then pulling it out, which I never realized was possible, and may not have been on my last rig. It's a little off-putting, but everything still works.)

Thank you

I am going up to camper on Sunday so will try this. I know that I never got the key turned to right. It seemed to stop at top and did not try to force it. It turns easy to the left.

I appreciate the response.

If they key turns at all in the lock, it's not a key/pins problem. Try pressing inward on the door by the latch, as you turn right -- the deadbolt could be binding in the hole. Or the deadbolt itself could be broken.

If you can get inside at all (I have two doors, so I'm lucky), retract the deadbolt by hand from inside, then open the door and play with the key. If it extends but refuses to retract, you'll probably need to replace the entire door handle.

Door lock

Thanks for replies.

Does anyone know if the manke combination locks for rv doors. I have one at home for the door to my house and also my garage. They make life simple!

There are several different locksets available for RV entry doors and some have keyless entry with a remote fob. Google/Amazon are your friends

I realized DW was doing the same one day when I noticed the lock cylinder stuck on the end of her key after she “locked “ the door. She doesn’t do that anymore.

I agree with pushing on the door while turning the deadbolt to the right. I don’t normally do this when operating the locks, but I always do this when pulling on the handle to open the door. It frees up the handle to operate easier.

Fastech had a recall for the deadbolt cylinder getting stuck if you turned it a quarter turn and removed the key.

https://www.wescofastec.com/fic-cylinder-recall

I changed mine.

After reading that recall, I got spooked, so I went out and tested the locks. The key removes at 12:00 and 3:00, but not 9:00, which is proper operation. It's when DW removes it at 3:00 that I do a double-take.

The recall says that the ones that would remove at 9:00 would also jam the deadbolt, which made me wonder if this caused the OP's problem, but if he has a 2022 that's highly unlikely.

I HIGHLY recommend Bauer locks. I have upgraded all locks on my previous 4 RV's and cannot recommend them enough. Don't get just the door lock, but also all your baggage and shower door locks at the same time, if applicable. They will key them all alike and you only need ONE key for the entire trailer... A little spendy but WELL worth it.

thank you

Thanks for all the reponses.

I was at my rv yesterday and able to get the deadbolt unlocked. When I first put the key in it doesn't seem lined up perfectly and doesn't appear to want to turn. But after moving the key around a bit , it works.

I appreciate the help!!

If the problem continues, your core may be bad. It can easily be replaced with one keyed to your current key, straight from the manufacturer. It may be a Lippert warranty issue on a rig this new.

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned is the possibility of the rv flexing in the area of the Door frame causing the drag on one or both of the bolts sliding along the door plate. We had this problem on the Raptor. Usually pushing in very hard on the face of the door allowed the bolts to slide.
