I don't know if I fully understand the situation yet; looks like you've updated your profile and this is a 23 model, right? Are you saying you run an extension cord from an outside outlet and PLUG the water heater into it and it works but there is no plug in the rv for it to plug into? Is there a breaker in the electrical panel labeled "WH" or some other similar designation? Where does it go/what does it control?

The only "electric water heater wiring" that has an external 120VAC plug that I'm aware of is the "aftermarket Hott Rod" which is a replacement for the anode rod on a Suburban water heater (not recommended as it deletes anode protection) and a similar model that replaces the plastic drain plug on an Atwood water heater. Both of those have a power cord with a plug on the end.

Other than that, I'm not aware of any Suburban or Atwood water heater that's used as OEM equipment that has a power cord with a plug.....

Actually the newer Suburan SW12DEL series water heater ships with a conventional 120 male 3 prong plug on the end of it..

The RV has an outlet to Plug the water heater into.. look at their website and you will see the junction box and you will see a cord with a plug on it

The older SW series just used a junction box to hard wire but not with the newer units

My Bullet's water heater plugs into an outlet box. This box is also where the 12 volt control solenoid is located, which switches the 120 volt outlet. It is a 6 gallon Dometic/Atwood. 2019 vintage

My. 2021 Cougar 368MBI has a 120 plug for the electric part of the water heater and the 12 volts that controls the gas is hard wired coming from the in command controller

Nor do I obviously!! Can't imagine building an RV with a plug in water heater with no place to plug it in but there's some new quirk in most trailers from time to time.

I just don't understand a plug in water heater at all! With the quick connect outlets in an RV, and high draw of a water heater seem like a bad idea! Must be a big time saver on the assembly line.

I'm gonna guess that Suburban started building the SW xxDEL series water heater with the 120 volt round cord and plug to reduce the number of issues with burnt up remote relays...

The OEM factory junction box 120 volt romex wiring has been less than stellar and by building the water heater with a male wall outlet plug it may minimize the issue..

Sloppy wiring has been seen on many units with regards to the WH electrical junction box.

The image here is from a 2021 Montana and you can see the remote relay in the junction box with a round power cord coming out and ( not in the image ) on the other end is a 120 male wall plug.

My previous camper (a Forest River product) had a conventional 120 volt plug that connected to an outlet under the sink. It was actually very convenient as I used an extension cord to connect it to the 20 amp outlet on the pedestal when available or into the camper's outlet if no pedestal outlet was provided. That made it convenient on my 30 amp camper.

Apparently Woody knows what he is doing as he has not started a fire. I would caution others concerning the use of an extension cord for this purpose unless you know how to size the proper gage and length. Heating elements draw a lot of current and the extension cord itself acts as an additional resistor. Be careful out there!

I used a 12 guage cord, rated for 20 amps.
