Troubleshooting Power to Rear Camera Connection

Good afternoon all,

I'm trying to install a Furrion rear camera on a Fuzion 369. I pulled the rubber plug above the tailgate and found the two wires (one yellow, one white). I connected the truck to the trailer and turned on the lights. All the trailer's running lights are on but when I check the two wires (with voltmeter) that supposedly are part of the "pre-wiring" for a camera, there is no power to them.

Can anyone suggest what to troubleshoot to figure out why there is no power to those wires?

Thank you,
Alden

Alden, You might want to clarify the "rubber plug above the tailgate" There is nothing above the tailgate except air on my truck. Why would you be fishing for wires on your truck? Do you mean on the rear of the camper? BTW: I think there are various Furrion systems so you might want to provide more info on which you have.

Keystone is vague

Hi. I talked to keystone about whether the camera power was full time or just with the lights on and the answer was that the vehicle has to be running for it to be powered but the lights do not need to be on. Also asked where it tapped into the connector wiring and no matter which way I asked, the answer was just "someplace near the battery". Had a hurricane here so tracking it down was not a priority. Will post on here when I find where it goes. I want to make it always on to utilize the motion sensor aspect.

Thanks for the question. The ramp door on the toy hauler. The rubber plug is between the top of the ramp door and below the awning.

When I had the trailer in for some warranty work last year, I asked the mechanic at the dealer whether the trailer was in fact pre-wired for a camera. He removed the rubber plug, fished out the wires ad said, "yes, the wiring for the camera s here." He did not check them to see if they had power to them.

The trailer was connected to the truck, the truck engine was running and the vehicle lights were on. All running/ marker lights were illuminated on the trailer.

Apparently there is no consistency......My 2020 Cougar was pre-wired for a Furrion camera and I had the dealer install the camera prior to delivery. My lights MUST be 'on' (not 'auto') for the display to receive a signal from the camera.

As an RV tech, I can tell you that the wiring for the camera has nothing to do with the battery on the camper. The camera on the back or sides of your camper are powered by the parking lights, so you will need to turn on the parking lights when you want to view the camera. Now as far as the monitor, you may have to have your truck running if your power supply to the monitor is only on when the ignition is on.

Just a hunch, but check your 12 volt DC fuse panel. Look for a fuse slot with no fuse but wires connected to the right side connector... You may have one of the "few but proud" that Keystone wired to a separate fuse, did not install a fuse, making the circuit "dead" until you insert the 15 amp fuse in the socket...

FYI: Exterior lighting doesn't have fuses inside the camper, they are powered and protected by the tow vehicle alone.

Technically the exterior awning lights do have a fuse inside the unit as does the docking lights if equipped. On a toy hauler the rear ramp/patio light has a fuse inside.

Not trying to be argumentative. OP:

If your unit is prewired for the Furrion camera, as a rule the housing is already mounted and power is provided by the center clearance light. There was a couple years that Grand design did wire direct to the battery in the 7 way junction box. IIRC, Furrion said the cameras weren’t getting “full voltage” from the clearance light. All the Keystones I have dealt with have used the clearance light, current dealership doesn’t sell toy haulers.

I've heard of some cameras being wired to the backup lights. You might try shifting to reverse if you still haven't found the power source.

Not always, my camera has power as long as the battery disconnect is on, has nothing to do with the TV lights. Keystone is nothing if not inconsistent.

I didn't have power to my camera after the first use. We pulled it apart and did the same thing, only realizing after that there is a power switch on the ceiling in the garage.

On my new Raptor there were garage switches that were not marked. The camera was installed at the factory. I turned switches on and walk around looking for something on and found one was the camera power. A little labeling would be nice from the factory.

When I found the breaker for the res fridge in this unit it was labeled "rec"??? Figure it was labeled for the receptacle but failed to mention fridge. The rest of the hen scratching had to be deciphered as well. That's why I have a new Dymo label maker in the passthru…..which I just remembered. Now, if I can only remember to get out there and make nice new labels for those things....

My last 5th wheel breaker/fuse panel looked like it was labeled by a left handed dyslexic Chinaman or someone scribbling trying to get their pen to write, couldn't cipher any of the markings, spent an entire afternoon with the he DW flipping switches to get figured out.

Thank you to all of you that provided ideas and experiences. I'll have lots to look at when I get back over to the trailer. Was going to work on it today but learned this morning that I had an injured dog and spent the day at the animal emergency room. I won't say Tito is resting comfortably but he has enough drugs in him that he's no longer whimpering.

Might also check for a single in line fuse in the battery compartment. Mine was wired separately, with this fuse just before the fuse block. I have heard of the fuse actually missing here from factory. Mine was there and visually looked ok, but a meter proved otherwise.

Completely understand. Puppy seems to have some sort of liver problem we've been dealing with for a couple of years. Set to come home on 7/1, took her in for a checkup on 6/21...long story short the report wasn't what we hoped and stayed another month until 8/1 so she could see an internal specialist. So yeah, take care of pup, the other stuff can wait - and good luck to you and puppy (I call all dogs "pup").
