Backup lights & camera

I have added LED backup lights to the rear bumper of my 2011 Laredo 291TG, connected to a light switch in a rear storage compartment. I also added a Garmin wireless backup camera to the licence plate, power connected to the running lights. I have learned that the 7-pin plug on both the truck and camper have a connection for backup lights, I am going to run a wire from the plug, under the camper to power the lights and camera.
Two questions: what would be a good wire gauge to run and,
do I need diodes to keep power from going in the wrong direction back TO the truck? I would like to keep the lights connected to the power switch so that I can use them as utility lights when not hooked up.
