Those darned staples just don't hold up to a high speed impact and Jack knifing! What shoddy workmanship!

But seriously, I hate fog as much as ice. Recently near Williamsburg VA a freezing fog (worst of both evils) on I64 created a 60+ vehicle pile up. Several people severely injured. The only thing you can do is pull off to a rest stop and wait it out for if you drive an "appropriate" speed for the conditions chances are some idiot traveling at a high rate of speed will run you over.

One of my greatest fears driving on the interstate is limited visibility and "crazies with a death wish (or immortality)" who don't slow down. We've been caught in snowstorms in the past with near whiteout conditions where we really shouldn't be on the road, but no way to exit until the next town. Pulling over to the side is not an option as demonstrated by the Expedition/Imagine and all the cars/trucks in the median.

As risky as it might seem, sometimes there's no good option except to keep going (as carefully as possible) to the next exit and hope the "crazies" are headed in the opposite direction (on the other side of the median)…. As soon as there's an exit with some place to "hole up" getting off the interstate is a grand idea... Until then, there's no good option.

Could not agree more!!
I would like to think what the Crazy's are thinking as the travel at posted speed into a white out or heavy fog. Do they believe that just because they are on an interstate there will be nothing blocking the road in front of them????
The other thing that amazes me is those that will ride just feet off the bumper of the car in front of them at 70 mph, see way too much of that around here.
I think with all the new technology in vehicles people think the vehicle will save them from an accident.

This is so true. Coming back from Dallas once we hit a storm that completely whited out visibility due to heavy rain and hail. As it began we happened to come upon an overpass that gave us cover. I pulled completely off the pavement on the side with flashers on thinking if someone were going to hit me they would have to be completely out in the weeds (I was the 2nd one to park. The other guy was WAY off to the side right under where the bridge came down to hit the ground - he was the smart one). Before we knew it folks were parking all over the place; behind me, beside me all the while vehicles whizzed by at 75mph, in a white out. The cars continued to pack in until, now get this, they were parked in the slow lane of the interstate not thinking about how stupid that was. Then to compound stupid, not one, but two semis whizzed by in the passing lane at reckless speeds. As the people continued to pile under the bridge I told DW the only safe thing to do was to get on the road and do what you suggested to try to find safety. If a semi had hit the packed cars in the right lane it would have been like a pro bowling champion rolling a strike and all those vehicles would have been smashed to smithereens. Yes, there are too many crazies these days.

Come to the Central Valley sometime. Our fog is the nastiest, and I had to commute in it for over 25 years. The stupid stuff you would see! I always left early and drove a LOT slower. I remember the days of polyester uniform pants, Tuffy (not warm) jacket and walking the fence line with a frozen 12Gauge for hours not being able to see 5 feet.

My parents were traveling from Washington to Yuma in the 60's and got stopped for wreck in the fog in the central valley. I guy told them to across the median and go back to the last town with their car and small TT. They learned later that people keep piling into each other. Something like 150 rigs. He probably saved them from become part of it.

2003, I was nearly killed in a dust cloud on the freeway. A 48,000 lb private construction vac/sweeper truck was working alone without warning vehicles or signs in a 65 mph zone. They drive about 5 mph while working.
It put out a dust cloud that covered all east lanes to the point that the truck with its flashing lights was not visible. Traffic was light, as I approached no visible traffic behind me. I drove the patrol car onto the right shoulder with all the light bar police lights on at slow speed. The truck was in the fast lane stopped with the driver walking in front of it picking up large debris. I stopped ahead of the truck, still on the shoulder and yelled at the guy to get going before he caused a crash and turn off the vacuum. He walked over to me, I was not about to get out or even take the seat belt off. I continuing yelling at the nut to get off the freeway. The next vehicle to come by was traveling at 70 mph in the slow lane, finally seen the police car and braked hard. He hit the patrol car pushing it 30 plus ft as the patrol car was ground into the guardrail. I was lucky the speeding vehicle was a RV-7. He was lucky no one was a passenger. The RX-7 did not have a passenger compartment after the impact. The nut standing in the road was lucky also, the RX-7 passed him on his left as the patrol car passed him on his right.
I was trapped inside the vehicle for awhile, 1 that was known to blow up when hit from behind.
Truck driver was cited for a crime "Reckless driving" causing injury or damage. the RX-7 driver was cited for "Careless driving" due to, to fast for circumstances.
I was in hospital 3 days. Off work 2 weeks. If a 18 wheeler tried to do what happen it the story that started this, they would have been at least 3 dead.

It was later reported that a Yugo in traffic aft of the accident was overloaded with 5 passengers and this may have contributed the accident cause. The truck driver was distracted to see such a sight.

Just seeing any Yugo in Texas might have stunned him into catalepsy.

After getting socked on for two mornings in Livingston, I see what you mean! I hate fog.
