Safe Installation

I am not exactly sure where to post this question on the forum, so if someone knows of a better place please let me know.

I own a Summerland 1890 tt and I was considering installing a safe in the cubby hole located above the radio. Does anyone know how deep I can drill a screw into the bottom panel of that cubby without hitting the radio or know the clearance between the radio and that panel above it?

Most radio installations are different from brand to brand. The radio is held in place by 4 screws. The radio bezel should come off with your fingers and some light pulling. Once it's off, you can remove those 4 screws and slip the radio out of the mounting hole and then you'll be able to easily measure for clearance.

Most of the "premium" line (can you say "expensive") have a security box or small safe installed at the factory. Usually they are in a corner of the under-bed storage area. There, they can be mounted to the metal frame of the RV which makes them much harder to "rip out". There's not a lot of strength in the luan paneling, MDF trim and the 1x2/2x2 "whitewood" framework used in the cabinetry in most RV's.

Thanks John, I might just remove the stereo prior to installation. I completely agree that a safe mounted here could be easily ripped out of the RV, but I like to think a safe acts as a slight deterrent.

Most RV radios only go into the cabinet a few inches so clearance should not be a problem. I used the "out of sight, out of mind" theory and put my safe in an overhead cabinet and attached it top, bottom and one side. It would be easier to break it open than to rip it out.

I like the idea of placing it in a cabinet where it is out of sight, but the one I purchased looks like just a piece of metal from the front as the entry buttons are located on the top. Hopefully it blends in somewhat or off to a cabinet it goes.
