Sounds like you are on the right track with the 6-volt batteries.

Since I exclusively "Boon-dock" I have worked to reduce battery draw. Two things I have done are,... put an On/Off switch on the radio to completely remove 12v to it and also, on the fridge, between the freezer and Refer doors there is a flat section of trim that contains a heat strip. This prevents condensation from forming. I installed an On/Off switch for it. As long as I'm camped in low humidity areas I have never had a problem.
