Keystone Passport Front Door wont Latch

Good Morning
My Keystone passport 268BH, front door will not dead bolt. The other keyed latch still works, but we cannot dead bolt it from the inside.

i tried to adjust the strike plate and entire locking mechanism, but it still is hitting the door, almost like the door might be sagging a little.

Everything else seems square, the door frame doe not rub any ware.

It seems to be hitting the bottom of the strike plate.

Anyway, I tried to tighten the frame, but the frame has a strange screw head type, can anyone confirm that these might be Double Square heads?

Thanks!
Brian

Those are star or torx head screws. They make screwdrivers with those heads as well as bits for drills and ratchets. If you don't have them you need a set(s) of them. Have you tried adjusting that strike plate? Is the bolt hitting high/low or front/back? Those things can move during travel and use.

Did it work before now? Being a 2022 it should be covered under warranty so you might want to consider taking it in.

What steps do you have? The tip-in solid steps can cause the door to bind if the feet are not set properly. Related to that, if you have a friction hinge door (no gas strut to hold the door open 90°), the hinge can bind and flex the door out of whack. Just a couple of thoughts

I have a friction door hinge, I wonder now if that is it. I have an appt. but not till Aug 8, and DW wants a dead bolt before we camp again.

The dead bolt looks like its hitting low, it wont even go in with the strike plate removed. I am going to stop by the hardware store and get a set of torx, and try and tighten the bolts back up

Hello Friend.

I had a grandmother in law who like to slam doors mess up my strike plate. Now I can't confirm from that picture but it looks like it's not lined up. Loosen those screws and see if you notice that it's supposed to be in a difference position then try closing everything up again .

Might not be it. But something I've had to fix.

I bought a complete set of Torx bits, but none of them worked, the door is fastened by an 8 point bit, and neither of the big box hardware stores carry them, its almost like Lippert used a proprietary fastener.

I am going to call around tomorrow to some local RV stores to see if they have one.

Thanks
Brian

Looked at that initial right pic and looked like a regular Torx. This is probably what you want;

The description says “double square”

I didn’t really look at the pic when I first replied, I worked real early because of the heat. I use my regular roberts head on those.

The hinge screws are an 8-pointed socket. The bit is called a double-square bit (2 squares have 8 points). That being said, a square bit (the ubiquitous Roberts bit) will work. The 8 point is used for more contact points since there is quite a bit of torque involved, but a square bit will work.

Have you tried lubricating it? Use a dry lube or rub it with bee's wax and see if that works first, that's the easiest non destructive action. If that doesn't work go to the dollar store and buy a tube of the brightest lipstick they have. Rub the lipstick on the door latch and deadbolt plungers. Close the door, and operate the deadbolt. The lipstick will leave a "witness mark" where it hits the striker plate and you will see which direction and how far you need to move the strike plate.
