OCD vs Old Age and entry door that locked without a key

You'd think after owning our rig for 2.5 years we would have discovered all the operational nuances by now...

We returned to our camper after visiting with some friends at the campground. It was dark, about 1215 AM. My wife unlocked and opened the door, we put our stuff in the camper and then headed over to the campground facilities before turning in. When we returned we found the door locked!

Q: What do you do when all your keys to the camper and truck, phones, wallets, etc. are locked in the camper and you are locked out in the middle of the night?

A: Thank your OCD husband who hid a key under the camper a couple of years ago just in case. The only problem was I didn't remember where I hid it.

The issue: If you unlock the door and remove the key from the unlocked position the door will remain unlocked. Apparently, this night my wife unlocked the door, opened the door and then turned the key back to the locked position before removing the key thus locking the door again.

Moral: Do hide a key just in case, and check on it occasionally just to make sure it didn't fall off and so you remember where to look if you need it in an emergency.

I'm pretty OCD about lots of things. Keys are one of them. I have a set on me all the time. A permanent set of keys stays in the truck (trailer). DW has a set of keys and we both have keys to the truck. I even carry a spare set in the locked tool box inside the locked bed of the truck. At home it gets even worse.

I've been locked out of "my stuff" maybe twice in over 70 years - I don't like it.

I have the same setup and also have a RV door key hidden on the trailer in a "hide-a-spare magnetic key holder". I only "devised the second option" when I dropped DW off at the trailer on my way to the boat ramp and was gone for about an hour. She was not "a happy camper" when I drove up with the empty boat trailer and a beer in my hand while she'd been sitting in the shade, swatting mosquitoes and getting madder and madder with every swat.... So, now there's an emergency key at the trailer for those "special moments" when the truck isn't around.....

I’m the same. Got an RVLock for our Cougar after we were about an hour from home headed to the camper at its seasonal spot - 3 hours from home. At least we were only an hour away when we realized we didn’t have a set of keys with us. Ordered an RVLock that weekend. I wasn’t going to do that again! RVLock for the new camper came about a month before the new camper got here from manufacturer. I learned my lesson quite well!

Here's my story! Click here! After all this, I found a place to store another set of keys. Haven't had to use them yet ... thank goodness!

I keep a set of camper keys with the second tongue jack remote and a truck key that's not chipped (won't start truck) on a carabiner in the truck door pocket. The truck key I use for the tongue lock (a Bolt brand, keyed to match the truck) so I don't have to turn off the truck while hitching up. If that key gets stolen it won't start the truck.

While I have all locks on the trailer keyed alike there's 2 trailer keys on it just in case I break one. Unless I'm wearing dress pants I keep my keys clipped to my belt or belt loop on a carbriner. Old habit from many years of boating and visiting construction sites where dropping a set of keys could lead to an unpleasant experience.

I looked at these a while back and thought they were a little too pricey. May need to reconsider now.

Be sure to hide a key somewhere even with that keypad lock! I can tell you for certain when the battery in the keypad dies you aren't getting in without a key.
Also hide the key somewhere that's not lockable! BTDT also!
Used my in laws car for a week or so while ours was in the shop, he had a very cheap keyring with the ignition & trunk key (obviously an older car with separate keys) that as I close the trunk that ring came apart with ALL the keys landing in the trunk just as it closed, after a long ordeal getting back into the car the locksmith had to remove the glove box lock for the code to make a trunk key. Told my FIL he should hide a key somewhere to which said there was one taped to the inside of the air cleaner that you can't get to unless you are inside the locked car.

i have a key on my truck ring. Wife has one on her SUV ring. Then we have another set of "camping" keys for the TT and storage that we keep in my truck.
Then i have a storage and door key hidden on the TT.

When we only had 1 main door key on my ring and another spare hidden on the TT, we used the spare twice on our first trip thanks to our little ones. That's what we call a "teaching moment" with our kids.

If I find myself being locked out of the TT with all of the precautions, I'll assume karma is paying me back for yelling at the completely grown up people with "student driver" stickers on their cars. One day that all of those hand gestures have to catch up with me.

If I did that I'd have to carry a note to remind me what it was.....then I'd have to remember where the note was etc. I'd end up trying to open it with my birthday, SS# and who knows what else.

Keep in mind that if you find it necessary to hide a key on your tow vehicle (a great idea), make sure to tell NOBODY where it is hidden, especially your wife/children. You might make an exception where your wife is concerned, but NOT your children! It won't be there when you need it.

We keep a complete spare set of keys in the truck. The truck has a keypad on the door if needed and I can also unlock the truck with my phone or watch if needed. They are in a console vault safe, so they are secure. But as others have said, RV locks only keep the honest ones out.
