Following is a list of bolt sizes and torque values;

3/8” bolt – 30 ft lbs

½” bolt – 75 ft lbs

5/8” bolt- 150 ft lbs

¾” bolt- 260 ft lbs

I believe that 3 marks 120 degrees apart indicates a grade 8 bolt and I would think that those bolts would be at least that!

Of course the size refers to the shank of the bolt and not the head and it's the head that shows the raised marks that indicate the quality of the bolt. My torque wrench only goes up to 150 ft lbs so I either need a cheater bar or a bigger torque wrench for a 3/4" bolt.

Hmmmmm 150 FtLb of torque. Can't you do that with a 25 FtLb wrench and just torque it 6 times ???? ROFLMAO

NOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The installation instructions on the Curt hitch indicate the 1/2" bolts that hold the hitch head to the rail base are to be torqued to 75FtLb. So, I guess that means 3 clicks on a 25FtLb wrench???? ROFLMAO.

Actually, the list of torques above is correct for grade 5 hardware. Now, using a 150FtLb wrench and a cheater bar is a good way to destroy a torque wrench. Not to mention if it slips...... Be careful, Flyguy !!!!

Oh yeah, I was just joking about the extra clicks to get the torque up there <wink> :0

Grade 8 Hardware torques:

3/8 44 ft lb

1/2 107 ft lb

5/8 212 ft lb

3/4 376 ft lb

JRTJH Thanks!

Could not locate my installation paperwork for my Curt hitch. No need to now; you have answered my question on torque of the bolts that hold the head to the rails. I moved my hitch head up one set. Have not had a need to hook up the 5er with the adjustment yet. Looks like it will level me out perfect from just measuring.

I have pulled the rig 2x to FL and back prior to adjusting and it towed like a dream. Someone at CW told me it looked slightly pitched downward and could cause uneven tire wear. Don't want that, so I moved it up slightly.

HOWEVER, going 2600 miles to AZ in January and I want to ensure every bolt and lug nut stay at the proper torque. No loosy; no problem-o

Outbackmel, No problem, glad I guessed the right hitch... Really, I also have a Curt hitch and used my installation sheet to get those figures. You can go to the curt website, click on heavy duty towing, then fifth wheel, and then your specific hitch and at the bottom of the webpage, there is a link for the installation/owner's manual. You can either look at it online or download and print it. I've started downloading all the manuals onto a flash drive, that way I have them with me wherever I go. That is as long as the battery in my laptop keeps working LOL

The website is: http://www.curtmfg.com/index.cfm?eve...&categoryid=38

As for torque on the 20 k and the 24k Curt hitch, there's two different torques, the first is the four pilot hex bolts, they are torqued to 100 ft lbs, retorqued at 500 miles and then every 1000 miles. The torque for the Mounting rail bolts is 75 Ft lbs and does not require any retorquing once installed.

There are different torque values for the 15K hitch, which is the torque value I listed above, the torque for the bigger hitches is different, the 20K and 24K use the vlalues listed in the above paragraph. Check out the website or shoot me a PM with your specific hitch and I'll get you the info.

Good luck on the trip, 2600 miles isn't "that far" just take it one day at a time

That would be a grade 5 bolt if I remember right.....grade 8 should have 6 marks on the head.....I could be wrong.
