Weigh stations and TT's

My wife was Just commenting that the weigh station she passes on her way home from work was open for business and trucks were pulling in.

What about TT's? Should we pull in? Is this a state by state (province by province) thing?

Yes, it is state to state, to my limited knowledge none of the lower 48 require (or) want to weigh a RV.

Exactly...Many states will actually have signs that say no RVs. Most right now only weigh commercial, but I have seen the police pull non commercial vehicles that are obviously overloaded into the scales.

I know ignorance is not an excuse, but I drive by and if ever pulled over I'll put on my confused, ignorant, face. Hope it works.

A few states have active signs just ahead of their weigh stations that will flash a message to pull in or pass when you go by. I have had a few flash to pull in but we never have and no problem so far. Don't remember for sure where that was; IL KY, TN or NC maybe.

No need to pull in when in TN.

Have been through KY and NC and never saw a "pull in" sign for an RV. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen though. VA just has "open" or "closed" signs, but don't require RVs to stop.

In good ole' California, any truck 10001 pound GVWR or over is ~supposed~ to have their weight declared (CVRA process, which is the little square weight sticker on the sides of certain vehicles) BEFORE they to or carry cargo. If the owner did do the process then technically they are required to stop at a scale empty or loaded/towing. The one ton (dually or SWR) are generally deemed a motor truck, vs. pickup truck.

Heres the verbiage:All registered owners or lessees of commercial motor vehicles operating at 10,001 lbs. or more Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) or Combined Gross Vehicle Weight (CGW) registered with the California Department of Motor Vehicles are required to declare the gross/combined gross weight at which their vehicle(s) will operate (see de nitions below). Pickup trucks with no body type modi cations (e.g., utility bed added, stake, etc.) and an unladen weight under 8,001 and a GVWR of 11,499 and under are excluded.

As an ex-OTR owner operator, I never passed a 'coupe', but as an RV'er I've never stopped at one either - and that includes California.

Operative phrase: "registered with the California Dept of Motor Vehicles...". If you don't have a CA license, doesn't apply.

True... but there are a lot of us here who are registered with CA. Point being, there are many in CA who ~should~ be registered with declared weight, but aren't, and if they happen to have enforcement action taken can be on the hook for back fees and penalties.

Only time I was weighed and inspected was about 39 years ago in Prince George County, Maryland. The scale was a 24/7 next to the Police Academy.

They tried to bust my b#lls about not having my GVW listed on the side of my TV, and "Not For Hire" on my trailer. They had the business card of a guy who could come letter me right in the coop, for a fee, of course. Attitudes changed in a big hurry when I flashed my New London County Sheriff's Tin from Connecticut, and requested them to call the watch commander. I think the Boss must have been a former Marine DI, and I had the satisfaction of watching them get dressed down properly, and received a truly heart felt apology. The rookie (trainee) was almost in tears.

Other than that, I've never had a problem as long as there were no Commercial Plates involved.

Good Luck

Isn't the other operative phrase "commercial motor vehicles"?

In CA, even a Small pickup truck (Toyota, F150 etc) are considered commercial motor vehicles, due to paying weight fees, even if not used in commerce.

This is true in VA as well. If you have a weighted tag then theoretically you're a commercial vehicle and subject to weigh stations, logs, driving maximums, etc, etc. Many with weighted tags display "NOT FOR HIRE" decals to declare private/personal "recreational" use.

With that said; in all my travels I've never once hit a weigh station. I did recently travel through GA with some automated systems that measure the trucks approaching and display instructions on a digital reader board. I was instructed to keep moving to no surprise.

You also lose your personal property tax deduction.

Dude tell me about it!

It's actually not all that bad. The personal property tax relieve is only on the first 20k of assessed value, and even then it only "relieves" 48.5% of the tax due on that value. In my county, that's roughly $360 bucks. Price you pay for driving a big rig is the way I see it.. If I wanted a car tag, I'd go get a half-ton pickup

DO THESE VEHICLES HAVE TO STOP AT THE SCALES?

PICKUP -- It depends on the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), unladen weight, and bed of the truck.

GVWR under 11,500 pounds, unladen weight of less than 8,001 pounds, and open box-type bed not exceeding 9 feet in length -- NO.
GVWR 11,500 pounds or more, unladen weight 8,001 pounds or more, or not equipped with an open box-type bed not exceeding 9 feet in length -- YES.

Discussion: According to CVC Section 471, pickups are a motor truck by definition, which is required to stop at the scales per CVC Section 2813. However, all California weigh stations have signs stating: "No Pickups." So, if a vehicle meet the definition of pickup in CVC Section 471, it is not required to stop at the scales because of the signs stating: "No Pickups." If the pickup has a GVWR of 11,500 pounds or more, an unladen weight 8,001 pounds, not equipped with an open-box type bed not exceeding 9 feet in length, or the pickup bed has been removed and a utility body or flat bed has been mounted, then it no longer meets the definition of pickup in CVC Section 471; it is then a "motor truck" under CVC Section 410 and required to stop at the weigh stations.
