Keystone Challenger slide out

We recently got our 2002 Keystone Challenger out of 9 month storage; the battery is old, and we were able to get two slides out, reluctantly. The third will not budge. I think that it's hydraulic, and I'm questioning whether I'm low on hydraulic fluid (I hear Dexron II transmission fluid is in order). I read somewhere that all the slides have to be in before I can check the reservoir and refill it. Can anyone enlighten me? I may not be able to get the other two back in.

Thanks in advance.

First thing, either replace or charge your battery.

Everything does need to be retracted including the landing gear if they are hydraulic before you check the fluid level.

If the pump keeps stopping, then the auto resetting circuit breaker may be faulty but fix the battery issue first.

What kind of maintenance did you do on the battery in the 9 mos.? If nothing I'd just replace it.

Isn't Brunswick in Canada? Getting a camper out of storage in the first week of January seems odd. Battery needs to be load tested and very likely charged as a first step.

Brunswick, Georgia, about 80 miles SOUTH of Savannah, GA and about 20 miles NORTH of the Florida state line. A far, far piece from Brunswick, Ontario, Canada...

Unable to retract everything as we're set up and no tow vehicle. Is the reason not to check fluid level that it won't be accurate, or is there pressure inside the reservoir and removing the cap would release the pressure. If I added a bit - it's not had anything done for 20 years - how much would be a "little bit". A teaspoon, a cup, or what. Thanks for the reply. We may just have to live without the slide out for three months.

Camper was stored 1000 miles away for the 9 months. The battery has always been disconnected for that time; in fact, it was disconnected for almost two years during Covid. Any recommendations on batteries. Thank you for the response.

There is NO PRESSURE in the hydraulic reservoir.. Taking off the cap will not be an issue.

20 years and NO maintenance on the fluid, etc is an issue. IMO

That said your Lippert hydraulic slide out CAN EASILY be operated without any battery.

You simply need to download the manual over ride instructions and use a cordless drill with proper size allen bit to drive the hydraulic pump. An allen wrench will also be needed to manually open the Hydac valve for that slide.

I looked back as far as I could and for the 2004 year ( yours is 2002 ) the Lippert hydraulic system is what was used.

Download the operating instructions for your Lippert system and you an operate the slide

You also NEED TO siphon out that fluid in the reservoir and replace with new when you can..

Thank you so much for all the help. Put in a new battery today and the slide is out where it belongs. I'll check the reservoir in April when the slides and all are in.
