Often Overlooked/Forgotten Item

For those who haven’t changed them yet, your OE shock absorbers are garbage. I’ve changed many that we’re only a couple years old with less than 50k miles. Have also changed many that we’re 10 years old with over 100k miles. Today I finally got around to changing mine that are 3.5 years old with less than 30k miles. All of the above situations had one thing in common, the OE shocks were shot. Doesn’t matter what year/brand of truck you have. Here’s a pic of mine, again only 3.5 years old with less than 30k miles. All 4 completely compressed and not expanding at all. Had been sitting like this for over an hour by the time I took the pic. These probably should have been changed about 3.5 years and 30k miles ago. Many people forget about/overlook their shocks on their TV. I am very biased on brand and only put Bilstein on my TVs. Looking forward to the difference my new 5100s provide.

Well I replaced the OEM shocks on our 2001 Ram 2500 at 255,000 miles. With 5er in tow usually took about three cycles to settle after a bad bump. We had bought the truck used with 234k miles. Seems like I replaced in 2012, about two years after we bought it. Well I was a bit surprised that the shocks were the OEM MOPAR shocks manufactured in 1999, in Brazil! All still charged, the Bil’s 5100’s that replaced them settled the truck in one cycle.
I have pictures but can’t access right now.

I’d say you got your moneys worth from the OE and they were well beyond their life cycle. Sometimes it’s hard to tell when shocks give up and they are an out of sight out of mind item.
