Toilet Rocking

Our RV toilet has started rocking forward when sitting down. I've tightened the two side bolts, but this isn't the issue. What might the issue be? Someone said use shims, or is there something more to it? *No leaks at this time.

If you've tightened the two exterior mounting bolts and it still rocks you need to remove the toilet. The only 2 things I can think of then is the mounting screws for the floor flange have come loose (hopefully) or the floor is compromised (leaks) has lost its strength. The floor could be weak under the front of the toilet but I would think you would have noticed that.

Get a new gasket to go under the toilet before you pull it - you could reuse the old one but I wouldn't. They are specific for the model toilet you have (Thetford/Dometic). If you've never done it, don't worry about it; it's very easy. The hardest part will probably be getting the water supply line off and on. Let us know how it goes.

Sourdough, thanks for the info. I don't see any floor weakness, yet it could be. Like I said, it's not leaking. I'll take it off and check out the floor flange screws first. If not it, I'll do what you said. Thanks again.

It's probably (hopefully) the flange screws. They sell the gaskets with a complete kit with a new flange/t bolts/nuts/washers but I doubt you will need that on a 2017 model. If I recall a gasket only is like $5-6 - again, brand specific. A Thetford gasket and a Dometic don't look the same.

It's possible the flange mounting screws were stripped on install. If so, I would suggest using a filler in the hole before reinstalling the screws vs using a bigger screw. I would worry that a larger screw might cause the wood to split since it's not far from the cutout for the toilet drain plus the holes in the flange will probably limit the size of the screw. Good luck.

Could also be the flange is broken. That happened on ours. I bought a steel repair flange that its over the existing flange at Lowes to fix the problem.

I believe it may have been Danny (Sourdough) who once said "If the toilet's a rockin' don't come a knockin'."

deadeye is right - sorry I didn't think of it. I should have included that in my post; was thinking about what could be wrong in a 1 year old trailer. I've not had a broken flange in an RV but I have in a S&B....and it does rock. Pulling the toilet will tell the tale.

Jim, you don't know how right you are!! "If the toilet's a rockin', don't come knockin" would be a VERY good idea at this stage in life....
