What year? What control system?
Some of the answers to your question will be based on the year of trailer and the control system in play (e.g. iN.Command, etc.) Most "older" (pre-2018?) generator systems don't have a "fully automatic" control system - they require you to manually manage the on/off cycles based on your needs/desires. So you likely can't set them like a thermostat on your heater and walk away having the system cycle based solely on need. [There are almost always exceptions to sweeping generalizations like this - Onan/Cummins, for example, sells an "auto-start" controller for most of their generators. But someone would likely had to have gone out of the norm to install this on a specific RV.]
Newer systems (e.g. with iN.Command and with "Auto Start") may well be set up with an "Auto Start" feature based on storage battery voltage. If your trailer has this system, the design might include the following features. If you have it, look at the generator controls in iN.Command; look for Start, Stop, and Auto buttons. To use the system, set "Auto". Auto-start will kick in at a measured voltage of 11.8VDC (that's measured voltage for more than 1 minute, not static at rest voltage), run for 1 hour, auto-stop, re-check voltage, and repeat as necessary. This is more like what you appear to want/need. Added Note: for "Auto" to work (auto-stop), the cycle must begin with an Auto-Start. Starting the generator manually, then setting to "Auto" will not work - you must let the system start itself.
Our 2018 Raptor is set up this way - our experience has been that it works about 50% of the time. I'm just as likely to get an iN.Command "Check Generator" message as I am to get a successful auto-start-stop. For this reason, I can not count on Auto-Start, so I pretty much manually manage the system anyway. Our iN.Command system is the Pro+ version - I'm told newer versions (2019+) may have different voltage auto-start levels.
I'm certainly not an expert at this; just sharing my experience. Let us know what year trailer, what size generator (factory installed?), if iN.Command is in play & version, etc. There likely will be others here who can help.
