Riley hasn't logged in since 08-11-2020 12:35 AM. It would be interesting to hear what happened but I don't hold much hope in that.

I did this cause I'm a homebrewer and I brew electrically so this was recommended. I used this circuit and installed a 50 amp RV service box just on the other side of the wall to my garage. when wiring the RV plug I only grabbed one of the hot wires from the 220volt service and also the neutral and ground. I rarely use the outlet that is used for my brew system so this is why I thought this setup would work perfectly for charging the batteries in my cougar and also running the AC when necessary or needed. Well I got it all wired up, plugged in an extension cord with a 50 amp male connector on one end and a 30 amp female connector on another, then I used a "cheater" cable to go from the 30 amp female to the 50 amp connector on the cougar. as soon as I plug in the rig the breaker blows on my service panel. I've used a VOM to ensure all wires are wired correctly and nothing is crossed, so I'm kind of perplexed on what is happening. any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Riley Ritterbusch
Why on earth did you not just install a 240V 50A RV outlet on the outside wall and stay with the original breaker that was in your service panel. What you've done makes no sense. As was mentioned elsewhere in this thread a 2 pole 30 amp GFCI will trip when power is only being drawn on one leg.
I too would strongly suggest that you have a qualified electrician come look at what you've done and how to best correct it.
Be safe

Wait, your trying to run a 50 Amp camper on a 30 Amp extension, plugged into a 50 Amp house plug that is only wired to half of a double pole 30 amp gfi breaker?
You cannot. Well you should not.

The only thing sadder than someone taking their baseball and going home because they didn't like the game is someone offering advice to a person who has gone home and can no longer hear them. Perhaps the OP isn't logging on and is reading this thread and taking away some very important safety advice but... well I doubt it.

It's a shame. I was going to ask for video.

Anyone belong to a "home brewing" forum? Maybe someone should go look for him.

Here's what you need. You can get it at Home Depot.

Riley, so you installed a 2 pole 30 amp GFI circuit breaker on a previous 2 pole 30 amp circuit, no harm done. A circuit breaker is intended to protect the wiring only, the GFI is intended to protect you, around your wet brewing equipment. I suspect the reason the 2 pole 30 amp breaker trip when you plug in your TT has to do with bonding the neutral and ground in the TT panel or elsware.

It sounds like your TT is wired for 240 V 50 amp service, you might try wiring in a 240V 4 wire 50 amp rated receptacle to plug in the TT cord into. Remember you are protected with a 30A GFI circuit breaker so this will limit the load in the TT, and all wiring will be protected. Again, if the panel in the TT is bonded you will immediately trip the GFI breaker in the house.

Bite the Bullitt and wire and wire in a new 50A circuit for your TT.

Best of luck and pay attention to the brew. Before the last move I had a Hops garden

30 amp

As a licensed electrician, I get scared when novices start using 250 volt 50 amp outlets for 120 volt 30 amp applications then converting back to 50 amp and again to a 30 amp adapter. Why not add a proper outlet and breaker up front?
