dont have a dog,the last one in our family, she was 13 years old, cant handle putting on other family member Down, congrats on your friend getting better.
Letting go is the hardest part. Each one takes abort of you when they go. But another usually finds you and will heal the hole left by the last.

Dog people are dog people. For us we derive an infinite amount of joy walking the dogs, traveling with the dogs, camping, riding over town, snuggling , ball throwing, you get the picture. They become not part of life, but fused to where our life needs them.

I know that sounds silly. The wife and I talk about it often. We just can’t imagine not having a dog or two ( we have 4 now) We wouldn’t know what to do!

Our house is very lonely without a 4 legged companion. My DW rescued a cocker spaniel years ago from a doctor (he bought the dog from a dog mill, kept it in his office for his 12 yr old twin boys after a divorce). Poor dog was abused and DW would take care of it when she went to that doctor, at the time for weekly treatments. The doctor asked her to take the dog after a few months.

The poor dog was so traumatized by males that it took 3 years for the dog to trust me. I became the dog's favorite and she would climb in my lap the moment I sat down. The dog ended up costing us about $12K in vet bills over the years with eye surgeries, ear surgeries, and kidney stones. Partly due to the breed, most from the inbreeding of the puppy mill.

Wishing your dog the best in recovery.

This was “Layla” who we lost about 1 1/2 years ago ...leukemia. Prior to her there was a black lab “Gabbie “ who was 13!
Just haven’t been able to think of allowing another one into our lives yet....

They become part of the Household.

Had both dogs and now just cats. Here is our 16 year old Siamese. Wish our Blue Healers lived just as long. He's a heat seeking purr box.

All are rescues, and I firmly believe any animal that adopts a family knows they were rescued. I have 2 cats that live to curl up on my lap and purr!![/QUOTE]
