I put in the Tailgater 2 system with the mount on my roof. So far I love it. I have to get on the roof to connect it (also love my collapsible ladder). If its pointed in the nonSouth direction ok n, I just disconnect it from the holder, and turn it. Click image for larger version

If you have a dual output Tailgater/Playmaker and two Wallys you can connect both to one TV but you are limited to watching and recording content that are on the same satellite. The Tailgater/Playmaker are only capable of looking at one of the three satellites at a time. If you are watching say TBS on one Wally and want to record HBO at the same time on the other, it won't allow you since they are on different satellites.

Why do you have to turn it? Doesn't the Tailgater just automatically find the satellite regardless where it's pointed? I'm leaning towards the Pathway X2 because I won't have to climb on top of the RV.

With the Playmaker antenna, which is the smallest and lightest weight of the bunch (I think), you have to turn the side mounted carry handle to compass north so the antenna can find the southerly birds. I don't think the antenna inside the dome has a full range of motion; probably only a few degrees so in order to find the satellites, the Playmaker dish must be pointed in the correct general direction. The folks with motorhomes who want to watch TV going down the road use a dish called a Traveller and it will orient 360 degrees I guess. Costs a couple thousand bucks or so. They are also having to spend money to retrofit for DirecTV if I read comments on other forums correctly.

I have been in few camp grounds where there were no trees near my 5ver when parked; many times obscuring a few of the southern sky. What do you do with the roof mount in cases like that? When I am parked at home I set the dish on my slide and the southern sky is in full view as we don't have any trees near my 5ver slot.

had to set my Playmaker dish about 75' from my trailer last weekend while camping to get a view of the southern sky. First pic is my 5ver and 2nd is the dish sitting on a picnic table a long way from the camper. You are supposed to max at 50' of RG6 but I used 75'. Works OK. Note BIG tree in back of our camper? Just could put the dish on the roof or near the camper to get clear of the trees.

That doesn't look like much of the trees are blocking the TT. It seems like you could set it closer.

Really? I was there and needed to move the dish where it was moved. You miss the point I am trying to make. There are times when the dish just can't sit on an RV roof and see the southern sky. This was one of those times. Thanks.

To make sure there isxaccess to the southern sky. Just detach it, turn it and leave it sitting.

Just disconnect and turn it. It doesn't HAVE to be on the mount to work, just to travel or to secure it.

For best results the handle should point north. The Tailgater will find and lock on the the satellites faster. The three satellites are orbital locations 110, 119, and 129. 129 sets pretty low on the horizon from some locations and makes it difficult to lock in at times.

There is a new Tailgater called Tailgater 4 or Tailgater 61.5. It allows you to choose between 110, 119, 129 or 61.5, 110, and 119. 61.5 is considered part of the Eastern Arc and has the same programing as 129 and sits a little higher in the sky and gives you a choice in the menu of the Walley. The Wally is required to get access to 61.5. Winegard also has the Playmaker 2 which supports 129 and 61.5. If you have the older Playmaker 2 you can go to Winegards website and download the new firmware, put it on a USB drive and update the Playmaker 2 to access 61.5.

Do you have to do that with all the dome type nonmotion roof mounts?

Good deal; now that makes sense! I personally would also have a tripod as a picnic table or other way to get it off the ground in the event of a lot of rain seems like a dandy idea. I am not thrilled with the tripod since it relies on the rubber feet to sit in cut outs and then you turn them a bit to secure the thing. Not real positive but it does work. I carry a gallon water jug filled about 3/4 with gravel and hang it with a bungee connected to the base of the tripod to keep it fairly secure from wind. They give you a stake to put in the ground but in my part of the world, that just ain't happening most of the time.

I think the mount on the roof makes a lot more sense but they should have put a crank like the OTA antenna where you could rotate it without climbing the ladder. At my age, the ladder isn't my favorite activity.

Gary, If I understand, the less expensive portable dishes have to face pretty much to the south. If you have a roof mount, that means either parking the right direction based on the way the dish was already pointed or going up and physically turning the dish to point south and re-fasten to the fixed mount.

I used to carry a 10 lb weight from a barbell set my son's used to have, hung it with a bungee cord, when I used the tripod before.

If you have Dish at home and have the Hopper, I highly recommend just getting a portable 1000.2 dish and a tripod and taking the Hopper with you. That way you have all of the recordings you made at home, get 16 tuners and don't have to worry about when trees are blocking the roof of the RV. With the right meter and app, it takes less than 5 mins to set up and point.

UPDATE! When I first started using Dish in my camper I told folks they claimed you needed a USB2 digital hard drive of no more than 2 gigs. Dish claimed you had to have a separate 110V power supply. I bought one that fit these criteria and it worked for awhile and then started acting up; would crash the Dish box for no apparent reason. I just disconnected but a couple weeks ago got the urge to put another DVR on my Wally and record shows prior to going camping in case we got bored with what was showing. I bought it from Dish (their hardware partner) and got the hard disk and found it was USB3 and got its power from the Wally via the buss and didn't need some power cord. I think you could use most any hard drive but Dish does format so not sure about size. I had already paid the Dish ransom to use a hard drive and initially got a message saying I had to call them to "activate". I ended up rebooting the Wally a couple times and it let me format the hard drive and I set up a number of shows to record; keeping in mind only one tuner so best learn about how to change record priorities. Blue Bloods, Last Man Standing, House Hunters International and a couple others both my wife and I enjoy.
