Hey Chevy Fans, A Little Advice Please.

I've been a Ford guy most of my life, but a month or so ago, my 2004 Explorer was totaled in a car accident and now I'm in the the market for a NTM second car.

A local dealer has a 1999 Suburban 2500 2WD with about 141K miles that appears to be real clean. The attraction for me is that it would probably handle our 32-foot Cougar travel trailer a little (a lot?) better than my F-150.

Most of my experience with Chevy's -- save my '72 C-10 pickup which I'm restoring -- hasn't been real good. But Suburbans seem to hold their value and the fact that there are a lot of them for sale with 250,000 to 275,000 miles tells me this old girl might still have some useful life left.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I've not had a Chevy in a long time either. Looks like it has 8 lug wheels which is good. I know you know this but I would take a long look at the suspension; especially shocks and springs. Don't know how much salt they put down in your area but in 19 years a lot can go south. Hopefully it works out for you and will be an improvement over your current TV.

I've always been a Chevy guy and love them. They're just not for everyone....

That said, looks like a clean truck. Just check carfax and service records. Also, check and verify the hitch rating and the payload. Should be fine, but that's my opinion. It and z dollar will get you a coffee at McD's.

According to the vehicle info in the pic it has the 7.4 V8, the old 454 big block, so you should have NO problems towing your rv. The plus to this vehicle is, as you said, they hold their value so in a year or so if you don't like it you should be able to get your money back.

7400 Vortec (454) 290 HP, 410 ft/lb. I've had two Chevy Suburbans, both were 1500's. We liked them, got good service out of them.

I'm a Ford guy, but that said, all of my brothers-in-law retired from GM Truck and Coach and are "died in the wool" (not misspelled) GM.... They talk about rusted/corroded brake lines and issues with calipers on that generation. A nephew (son of one of the BIL) tows a 33' Jayco travel trailer and loves the performance. They travel between Tennessee and Michigan 3 or 4 times a year and never complain about towing issues.

On a positive note, (well, sort of) with the 454 engine, you'll pass almost everything on the highway, towing or solo.... But they'll probably pass you at the gas stations. That thing is a hungry engine. It'll tow most any trailer built today, at least to the next gas station.....

I think you'll like the performance and towing

My last truck was a 07 tahoe with the 5.3 in it. When I moved on from it, it had 269,000 miles on it. Considering it still had functioning cylinder deactivation, which was not known in the early years to be kind to those engines, mileage doesn't scare me. If it is clean and checks out with your mechanic (or yourself) than I wouldn't hesitate.

I bought mine with 172,000 miles it, fwiw.

I don't believe that year has any autoride suspension stuff on it, but if it did, I would look closely to that as well. Most if not all of that stuff that has bags/compressors/magnetic fluid (or whatever it is) is all pretty expensive.

Nothing wrong with asking here but I would look at a few of the many Chevy Suburban forums and ask there.
I subscribe to a Silverado Sierra forum and it's very interesting.

The nice thing about those is you can work on them if needed, they're not as computerized as these newer ones. The new vehicles if you open hood & drop a marble in the it'll never it the ground.
