What's your TV for x lite 28SGS

I really want to buy a new Cougar xlite 28SGS with triple slide. number says 1/2 ton towable, but it would max out the payload on mine, when passengers and stuff are included, maybe over a couple hundred pounds. I have seen this unit being pulled with a 1/2 ton. Is anyone doing this that could tell me their numbers and how it pulls at max and TV improvements you have made.

Thanks all.

I owned one and towed it with 2013 Chevy Diesel with a 2475 payload. The pin was just shy of 2,000 lbs loaded ready to camp With me and my wife (400lbs) and hitch (200 lbs ) I was right at the 10,000 GVWR of the truck. Those are CAT scale weights not stubby pencil.

I've not pulled that trailer with a 1/2 ton....and wouldn't. 1/2 tons just don't have the "cojones" for a 5th wheel of any size. You don't give any info about the TV but I would speculate that you would exceed your payload, GVW and GCVW. The Chevy website doesn't even give a spec for a 5th wheel with a 1/2 ton, they begin with 3/4 tons.

Re: What's your TV for x lite 28SGS

I towed a 2011 Springdale 26' fifth wheel with a F150 (max payload HD) half ton. That Springdale was considerably smaller and lighter than any Cougar XLite fifth wheel. I was at the very top of my GVW. We always had to watch what we loaded, seldom had any water, always empty holding tanks, couldn't use "heavy" wood chocks, had to use plastic lightweight ones, never was able to carry the generator AND firewood (had to choose which one) and always was "looking over my shoulder" every time we hit a bump. It was not "comfortable, carefree towing".

I will add that I did have the "privilege" of towing that trailer with both the half ton and a 3/4 ton. Prior to that fifth wheel, we had always towed travel trailers. That was our first fifth wheel experience and I "assumed" that the swaying, tracking issues we had were "just the way fifth wheels towed". I'll admit, it was better towing than with any of the travel trailers we'd had, but once I hitched that trailer behind a 3/4 ton truck and experienced the handling, I realized the "night and day" differences between towing with a half ton "at its upper limit" and towing with an "adequately equipped" 3/4 ton. We never had any sway, no tracking issues, no "weight restricted choices" and no feeling of "something's gonna break if we hit a bump" once we removed the half ton from the equation.

Currently we tow a Cougar XLite 27RKS which is comparable to your 28SGS in weight and size. I wouldn't consider it a "half ton towable" by any but possibly the "very largest HD half ton models". It is not a "standard half ton" towable trailer and the disclaimer in the Keystone brochure says: Cougar XLite offers multiple half ton towable fifth wheel models. It doesn't say that every Cougar XLite fifth wheel is half ton towable.....

Re: What's your TV for x lite 28SGS

I towed our 28SGS with a 2500 GMC 4x4, super cab, 6.0 Vortec gasser with 3.73 gears. Did OK on flat country. Not OK in hills in Tenn and Carolinas. Loses momentum screaming uphill, passed by 18 wheelers, gain speed downhill, pass the same 18 wheelers. Over and over. Wore me out. Bought a F350 diesel. Bought a Montana. Bought a Ram.

Re: What's your TV for x lite 28SGS

Didn't tow a 28SGS, but a 291RLS with a 1500 RAM. It's pin weight was only 1050#, and GWR was only 9000#. Upgraded the truck with airbags because of the sagging. I felt it towed well, but know it pushed the stated weight limits of the truck. It was rated at 1700#, and loaded the RV was right at 1300#, and the hitch was 120#, and with my SO and I, plus gear we went right to 1675#. Towing are braking weren't a issue, just didn't like being at the limit, and felt in the future planning on heading out west.

So, upgraded to the 2500, and definitely have some reserve capacity. While I felt the 1500 did fine, really noticed a great improvement with the 2500. It is stable and not even pushed around by the winds we've encountered. Now with 6000 miles of towing, I know it was the right choice. By the way, the RAM 2500 with towing package, actually shows you exactly how many miles you tow with a trailer with brakes, nice feature.

Another thing, is I upgraded to the CURT Q16 hitch. I feel that was a good improvement over the hitch in my 1500, and it was an upgraded hitch when I bought it, so not the cheapest one on the market.

Re: What's your TV for x lite 28SGS

When we bought our 28SGS - 13 model - we had a 2011 GMC 2500 gas w/3.73 gears. Towed fine but had to use 5th gear most of the time. Gas mileage about 9 - 9.5. Based on my experience I would not tow a 28SGS with a 1/2 ton truck.
My "CAT" scale numbers (loaded for camping - no water);
Pin - 1820#
Trailer Gross - 8700#

Re: What's your TV for x lite 28SGS

Mornin Terry... We tow with a '13 F-150 XLT, Screw, HD Ecoboost (still all stock suspension). Was towing a 31' Cougar TT. Previously towed TT with an '04 6.0 PSD F-250 (wasn't love but wasn't bad), then towed it 1 yr with the 150. Wife decided we should downgrade. Wanted to go with a 5er ...spent a year looking, researching and calculating the numbers. Seriously looked at the 28sgs (we loved it) and saleslady busted her hump to sell it to us ...but ...but... we knew it was to much for or our little teeny tiny little 150 regardless what the sales lady said. We eventually ordered the 28sgs' lil brother, the 26sab. Been towing it pertnear 3 years now. It's a perfect match for our little 150. MPG average 9.6-11.4. 90% of our towing is the the hills of the Southern Rockies in Southwest Colorado.

Re: What's your TV for x lite 28SGS

I have an X Lyte 27 RDS. I pulled it from Ohio to Utah and back with my 2013 Chevy 1/2 ton, 5.3 , 3.73 rear end, extended cab, 4X4, and load range E tires. (very important) It wasn't bad going west until I got to Denver. That is when I knew I had a small truck and a large load. G M said I was good for 9600 pounds with the truck configured the way it was. Keystone said Fiver weighed 7140 dry so I figured I was close to 9,000 pounds with our gear and us.
It pulled OK but the tranny got hot in the mountains and going up Wolf Creek Pass was a challenge. YOU CAN DO IT, BUT, I now have a Ford F 250, 6.2 liter in the driveway. We will pull to Florida in February. I can give a better opinion after that.
