Light weight 21 ft. trailer for me.

Thanks again
There will always be someone who will say they can do it no problem. Much of it boils down to the individual and what they view as "tows great". In short I am sure there are people who do it with "no problems at all". There are many out there overloading and maxing out rigs exactly how I have and swear by it, not just jeeps, especially consistent in half ton trucks and 5th wheels.

Realistically I have no dog in this fight, have a rig that can tow most any RV on the market. I have spent close to 50k more then I would have if I had only listened to some of these " weight police" they are called by some. Again for some their tolerance levels or frazel levels may be much higher then I, my tolerance level to jerks and pushes on a scale of 1/10 will admit, less then 3. This scale is based on my first hand experiance driving with people who say it tows great compared to my feeling.

Hats off to people like Javi and JR who give their experiance in this area

I tow with a 28'8" RV with a Kia Borrego with no issues. The only difference between mine and the Jeep is that the Jeep is a unibody. As I understand it, that means that a WDH will use the floor pan to transfer the weight to the front. I don't know if that matters.
I don't think the wheelbase calculation can be universally applied. The axle spacing on the RV and the number of axles make it difficult to make direct comparisons in my opinion (IMO for the youngsters). My understanding is that spread axle designs improve stability at the expense of low speed maneuverability.
I previously towed a single axle 17' RV with minivan. I used the same WDH as I do now. The wheelbase of the minivan was longer than the Borrego. I have less sway now than I did before.
Based on the calculation on wheelbases, the opposite should be true.

JGC is a clone of my ML and this is a good thing. You can tow reasonable RV and even have fun in the process. Yes, HEMI is peaky, and all the extra power may be just on the paper, and you may want to have extra 2-3 cogs in the transmission but it will still do the job. Short wheelbase is compensated by very short rear overhang so you can pull longer trailer than the formula may suggest. Is it OK to pull 30 feet with Jeep or ML for that matter? I dont know, to be honest. Probably yes, if you go to Canam and do things right. It is critical not only to have WD hitch but REALLY HAVE THE WEIGHT DISTRIBUTED CORRECTLY. Will you receiver be up to the task in transferring forces to the unibody? I dont know. My is, because it was "fixed". I would strongly suggest to stay away from cams or other "advanced " hitches and use 2 friction bar sway control, or Hensley

Having owned a JGC and pulled a 19' trailer; I can't imagine anyone trying to pull a 30' RV. The vehicle is too small, too short and too unstable. If you are using one and pulling a large trailer, well........you're just messing up.

I Towed the trailer in my Sig with a 14 Durango R/T. Trailer was under 5,000 dry. Has plenty of power, I just didn't like the feel. After a couple trips we now have the Silverado 1500 and feels much better. Having 2 young kids riding along helped that decision. Just because you can don't mean you should.

We had good luck never further than 300 miles pulling the GT 2400BH passport Found 62mph was the sweet spot in tow mode. Got about 7mph Not that it matters. I wouldn't take it a cross the country.

Since we upgraded to the 2760BH. I pulled it about 30 miles and set it on my seasonal site. It pulled fine but time will tell when we take our next trip.

I suppose one could pull a fairly long trailer with a JGC or similar if they just made a short trip and stopped. Where I live we regularly have 30-40mph constant winds with gusts to 50 mph and above. You can't pull a 30' trailer with a small SUV in that, period, and hope to be safe. I've seen similar rigs pulled to the side of the road many times in a situation like that. I've also seen them going from one lane to the other far too many times. Heck, I just saw an FJ Cruiser yesterday pulling a 30+ft. cabin cruiser on the highway here on the FL coast. Coming down the road the FJ was almost dragging the rear end and the boat looked like it sat about 4 times the height of the FJ. He could do it. Was he smart? I don't think so. The good thing was he was doing about 25-30mph max.

Probably another thing to consider when towing with these short wheelbase vehicles is that they have P tires. Add LT's, good shocks, a sway bar and the capability is enhanced. A Band-Aid, perhaps, but a contribution to the ability to tow a reasonably sized trailer.

The photo is crappy, but I can see that your pivot point is too far from the bumper, it should be next to it, no more than 1.5 -2 inches, just enough to put coupler on ball under the camera guidance. Weight distribution appears fine. Certainly, there is nothing encouraging about 7 mpg, I usually get between 9 to 11, depending on wind. But this is 2012, with 5 speeds only...

Going back to post #30. 2 weeks ago I purchased a trailblazer ext (extended wheel base.) , 4x4. It came with upgraded rear shocks and "p" rated tires. After 5 days I got LT tires. It does handle much better now. Easy to feel the difference when turning or switching lanes. That is without having towed anything. Booklet says I would be at it's limits pulling the current TT. I would never even attempt it. It might pull the boat to the nearby ramps within 5 miles of home. Having been there done that with being pushed across lanes and while attempting a hard quick stop. Get enough truck. Once you pull a large trailer with a large truck you will than know what great towing and handling is.

My DW has a 2012 JGC. While I was breaking in my truck, I towed my previous boat with it. It was was about 25' long with the trailer. I didn't have any issues, but did notice it back there. With my Ram, I barely noticed the boat behind it. All this being said, a travel trailer is a different animal. I wouldn't attempt to tow my current TT more than a few feet with the JGC.
