spindle washer-tang type

good day folks,

I just finished changing the bearings and brake assembly on my cougar, It was my first time doing it and it went well except now I have a doubt on that locking washer, I re-used the ones that was on the axles, they look ok but are they suppose to be ''one time use'' or they can be re-use if in good condition?

thanks!

JL

If they are in good condition, they can be reused (they are not crush washers).

If you are referring to the spindle nut retainer, they are not a disposable item, can be used many times over. http://shop.redneck-trailer.com/p-37...nut-6-190.aspx

Not sure why the sarcasm but if I have to explain here it is; 5er is at the cottage, 1 hour away from part store. When I was there I picked up the bearings, seals and brake. I assumed the castle nut was secured with cutter pins which I have plenty here but that wasn't the case. I wasn't trying to save money on a 25 cent part...

Not sarcasm but reality. I would replace them even if it meant repeating some of the work and chualk it up to experience. That's what I would do. You can do as you wish.

I would bet that anyone (nearly) would reuse that washer if it looked OK.

Maybe it's the way I was taught (old school) but I was taught not to reuse cotter pins, safety wire, or washers that have only one tang to bend. There are washers that have several tangs and I would reuse them IF there was a different tang to use. I just don't trust metal that's been bent as in my mind it equates to fatigue. Everyone is free to do as they wish.

Maybe mine do not require bendable tines. I do agree that metal that has been bent/deformed should not be reused.

Spindle Lock Nuts

[QUOTE=JeLo;514571]good day folks,

I lost a hub and wheel a couple of years ago because that 25 cent part had actually worn off the flat part and allowed the spindle nut to rotate itself off. Ruined the spindle of course during that process. I replaced the axle BUT while I still used that washer (new, of course) I also bought the correct size lock nuts for the spindle threads and now have a nut and lock nut. (yes, I had room under the dust cap). Actually, I did that same thing on my other 6 trailers that used that washer. Some of my trailers had castle nuts and cotter pins. I left those.

If you have the Dexter axle with the EZ Lube axle nut retainer it can be reused for years as long as it’s not damaged

Mine are currently nine years old and see no reason to replace ..

The retrained the OP posted his pic about would be different and I would replace it every time I repacked the bearings
