Automatic Transfer Switch

Hello. Newbie RVrs here. We bought a 2021 Montana Legacy 3121rl with solar (not super solar flex) It had been used twice. We used it once. On our 2nd trip, when we arrived at our destination we had power for a few minutes and then the beeping started. We could reset the inverter and it would go on then immediately go off. Vacation ruined we left and took it for repair. Was told the Automatic Transfer Switch was bad. It was replaced. So my question is, why would the switch go out after only 3 trips and how can we keep that issue from happening again?

Welcome to the forum

Sorry it’s under these circumstances, A little more information would help.

Were you dry camping? How many batteries and what group size? Was the solar the only charging circuit?

Not dry camping. Plugged into shore power. The rig has a 265 solar panel and one battery. I realize that won’t power much but we were planning on shore power. Battery/solar upgrade yet to come. We do not have a generator.

When it started beeping, you were on shore power or inverter? What size inverter and does it have “pass through”?

Factory installed 2000. And I’m sorry, I don’t know what a ‘pass through’ is. We were plugged into shore power. We have A LOT to learn.

There is a lot to learn owning an RV. Pass through would be a wiring option.

At this point, I would take the warranty replacement, and just move forward. Stuff, new and old breaks and that’s something I have learned in my years of working on these things. Learn as much as you can if you plan on staying with this lifestyle, and know that somewhere, someday, you’ll probably have another hiccup, it’s how you deal with it.

In this case, there was an option, but it would take some serious knowledge of wiring and transfer switches. I hope the dealership does you right, let us know.

That era Montana had a Progressive Transfer Switch that is notorious for to locking in generator mode. They are replaced by a lesser model when they fail. The replacement, assuming it isn't the same POS, should be fine from now on.

Yes the switch was replaced with a Progressive. Thank you! We are planning on another trip soon and I was worried that we had done something to cause it.
